  1. 1. Streptococcus pyogenes infections and toxic shock syndrome : molecular epidemiology and immunotherapy

    Author : Jessica Darenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A streptococcus (GAS), is an important human pathogen causing a wide variety of diseases. One of the most severe diseases is streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which is associated with high mortality rates. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) may also be caused by Staphylococcus aureus. 2. 2. Severe Streptococcus pyogenes disease in Europe; epidemiology and clinical manifestations

    Author : Bogdan Luca; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus pyogenes; streptococcal toxic shock syndrome; necrotising fasciitis; emm-type; invasive GAS disease; superantigen;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes, gives rise from mild skin infections and pharyngitis, to life threatening infections like bacteraemia, cellulitis, puerperal sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis (NF), and streptococcal toxic-like shock syndrome (STSS), or nonsuppurative sequelae, rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. In 2002, the first multinational network for invasive GAS disease surveillance was initiated by the EU-funded Strep-EURO project. READ MORE

  3. 3. Invasive group A streptococcal infection : host and pathogen interactions

    Author : Björn K G Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Group A streptococci; invasive infections; erysipelas; Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome STSS ; epidemiology; M1 serotype streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins Spe ; SpeA; toxin neutralization; opsonization;

    Abstract : Invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infections were studied in 229 patients with a clinical diagnosis of erysipelas and 151 patients with GAS bacteremia, respectively. Beta-hemolytic streptococci were identified in about a third of the erysipelas patients, mostly group A, whereas group G streptococci were identified in about half as many episodes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Streptococcal and staphylococcal tissue infections : therapeutic challenges and opportunities

    Author : Helena Bergsten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus have been leading causes of human infections throughout history. S. pyogenes is of the top-ten pathogens responsible for most death globally, 0.5 million deaths per year. READ MORE

  5. 5. Clinical and pathophysiological aspects of sepsis

    Author : Anna Linnér; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Severe sepsis and septic shock represent challenging problems for the health care system. Despite adequate antibiotics and modern intensive care, severe sepsis is associated with a substantial mortality rate of around 30%, which rises even higher if exacerbated by septic shock, and the incidence continues to increase.
