1. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system
Abstract : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. 2. Platelets and their immunomodulatory roles during Streptococcus pyogenes infection
Abstract : Sepsis and invasive bacterial infection is a major cause of human disease and death worldwide. Streptococcus pyogenes is one of the major pathogens responsible for bacterial infections, which range from mild to severe and life threatening conditions. S. READ MORE

4. Novel innate immune functions of saliva
Abstract : The innate immune system in humans has succeeded in developing numerous mechanisms against the injurious effects of bacteria, along with their toxins as a result of several thousand years of co-evolution. The oral mucosal surface represents such a unique environment, where despite being constantly exposed to microbes and their products, overt infection and damage is a rarity. READ MORE
