  1. 1. Dynamics of Disordered Materials in Confined Geometries

    Author : Christer Svanberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; polymer film; glass transition; confinement; polymer gel; dynamics; dielectric spectroscopy; gel electrolytes; relaxation; photon correlation; cooperativity;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with effects of geometrical confinement on dynamics in disordered materials in the nanoscopic range. Of particular interest is the dynamics around the liquid to glass transition. Two systems have been investigated: thin polymer films and polymer gels. READ MORE

  2. 2. Shaking the EF-Hand. Dynamics and Ion-Binding to Calmodulin and Calbindin D9k

    Author : Anders Malmendal; Biofysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnesium; line shape; ion binding; EF-hand; cooperativity; conformational exchange; chemical shift; calmodulin; calcium; calbindin D9k; allostery; backbone dynamics; NMR; relaxation; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The work described in this thesis represents a biophysical approach, mainly using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, to investigate the impact of magnesium ions on the EF-hand calcium-binding proteins calmodulin and calbindin D9k, as well as the dynamics of these proteins at low calcium levels. The x-ray structure of magnesium-saturated calbindin D9k shows a magnesium ion in only one of the two ion binding sites. READ MORE

  3. 3. Glass Transition Dynamics in Soft Condensed Matter

    Author : Johan Mattsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; polymer films; beta relaxation; hydrogen bond; glass transition; polymer dynamics; cooperativity; confinement; IXS; Brillouin light scattering; excess wing;

    Abstract : Materials of very different character, ranging from polymers to metals can be made into glasses. The structural and dynamical properties of glass-forming materials are fundamentally different from those found in crystals. Hence, glassy materials exhibit unique characteristics, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications. READ MORE

  4. 4. Theoretical Studies of Drug-Metabolizing Cytochrome P450 Enzymes

    Author : Junhao Li; Yaoquan Tu; Ulf Ryde; KTH; []
    Keywords : Cytochrome P450 enzymes; molecular dynamics; quantum chemistry; structural flexibililty; ONIOM; Teoretisk kemi och biologi; Theoretical Chemistry and Biology;

    Abstract : The family of cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450s) belongs to one of the most important enzyme families in the human body. P450s are involved in the synthesis of endogenous compounds and metabolism of exogenous substances. READ MORE

  5. 5. Protein folding without loops and charges

    Author : Martin Kurnik; Mikael Oliveberg; Kevin W. Plaxco; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein folding; folding cooperativity; protein aggregation; protein charges; protein engineering; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Going down the folding funnel, proteins may sample a wide variety of conformations, some being outright detrimental to the organism. Yet, the vast majority of polypeptide molecules avoid such pitfalls. Not only do they reach the native minimum of the energy landscape; they do so via blazingly fast, biased, routes. READ MORE
