  1. 6. Future stratospheric ozone depletion will affect a subarctic dwarf shrub ecosystem

    Author : Ulf Johanson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vaccinium; UVB; subarctic; shoot growth; ozone depletion; leaf thickness; irradiation system; heath ecosystem; Empetrum; dwarf shrubs; Calamagrostis; decomposition; Physiological biophysics; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : The stratospheric ozone depletion and the concomitant increase in ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation is of global concern due to the effects of UV-B on living organisms. To investigate the effects of increased levels of UV-B, a field irradiation system was established at a subarctic dwarf shrub heath in Northern Sweden (68 °N). READ MORE

  2. 7. Temporal and spatial dynamics in subarctic peat plateaus and thermokarst lakes

    Author : A. Britta K. Sannel; Peter Kuhry; Peter Jansson; Ian A. Brown; Serge Payette; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Peatlands; permafrost; subarctic; peat plateau; thermokarst lake; macrofossil analysis; carbon nitrogen ratio; peat accumulation; carbon accumulation; remote sensing; binary encoding; time-series analysis; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Permafrost peatlands are widespread at high northern latitudes and are important soil organic carbon reservoirs. A future warming in these areas, as suggested by global climate models, can cause thawing and increased ground subsidence (thermokarst), resulting in changes in surface hydrology and ecosystem functioning. 3. 8. A green future with thawing permafrost mires? : a study of climate-vegetation interactions in European subarctic peatlands

    Author : Julia Bosiö; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fennoscandia; carbon; greenhouse gas; photosynthesis; PAR; snow; climate change; permafrost; peatland; subarctic;

    Abstract : Climate projections indicate that Arctic and sub-Arctic regions are facing a significant change in climate during the 21st century. With warmer temperatures precipitation is also expected to increase, and in particular winter precipitation. READ MORE

  4. 9. Wastewater treatment and biomass generation by Nordic microalgae : growth in subarctic climate and microbial interactions

    Author : Lorenza Ferro; Christiane Funk; Francesco Gentili; Luísa Gouveia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microalgae; Wastewater; Nitrogen; Phosphate; Biomass; Lipids; Subarctic Climate; Light; Temperature; Bacteria; Photoautotrophy; Heterotrophy; Mixotrophy; HRAP; Metabarcoding; Microbial Communities; Alpha-diversity; Environmental Factors; Biochemistry; biokemi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Nordic native microalgal strains were isolated, genetically classified and tested for their ability to grow in municipal wastewater. Eight of the isolated strains could efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphate in less than two weeks. Two of these strains, Coelastrella sp. READ MORE

  5. 10. Mechanisms of below-ground carbon cycling in subarctic ecosystems

    Author : Maria Olsrud; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; subarctic tundra; phosphorous mobilization; organic acids; open top chamber experiment; 15N natural abundance; Ericoid mycorrhizas; global change; 14C pulse-labelling; Carbon allocation;

    Abstract : Some components of the below-ground carbon (C) cycle in terrestrial ecosystems are still poorly understood. A better understanding will be necessary to predict adequately the impacts of global change factors on C cycling and storage, especially in high-latitude ecosystems, where much of the C is stored below-ground.
