  1. 21. Enjoying life and living healthier : impact of behavioral and psychosocial factors on physical function in old age

    Author : Marguerita Saadeh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Declines in physical function vary substantially across older individuals due to, among others, several extrinsic modifiable factors. In this thesis, we aimed to better delineate the impact and interplay among indicators of behavioral, psychological and social well-being on functional trajectories, in initially healthy older individuals. 3. 23. Electrical remodeling in arial fibrillation - assessment using surface electrocardiograms, prognostic implications and potential reversal

    Author : Andreas Bollmann; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; electrocardiography; stroke; biomarkers;

    Abstract : The fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested for quantification of the individual atrial remodeling, to monitor interventions and to predict the response to different therapies. In this dissertation, the relation between fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG and (1) clinical and echocardiographic variables, (2) the outcome of cardioversion, (3) circulating markers of inflammation and hemostasis, (4) the risk of left atrial thrombus formation, (5) the risk of stroke, and (6) the effects of candesartan on the fibrillatory rate were investigated in human persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). 4. 24. Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegeneration

    Author : Mats Ekstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mitochondria; TFAM; Parkinson s disease; neurodegeneration;

    Abstract : The mitochondrial respiratory chain (RC) is responsible for providing most of the cellular energy in the form of ATP, and is also one of the main sites of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. The RC, consisting of five enzyme complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane, is unique in its bipartite dependence on both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). READ MORE
