16. Structural studies on aerobic and anaerobic respiratory complexes
Abstract : All respiratory pathways, whether aerobic or anaerobic, are based on formation of an electrochemical proton gradient called proton motive force (pmf) that drives ATP formation. Membrane-bound respiratory complexes translocate protons across the membrane from a region of low [H+] and negative electrical potential to a region of high [H+] and positive electrical potential. 17. Microbial Phosphorus Removal in Waste Stabilisation Pond Wastewater Treatment Systems
Abstract : Waste Stabilisation Ponds (WSPs) are characterised by low phosphorus (P) removal capacity. Heterotrophic bacteria are principal microbial agents in WSPs in addition to algae. READ MORE

18. Controlling Structure and Water Miscibility of Polyion - Surfactant Ion Complex Salts
Abstract : The interaction between poylions and oppositely charged surfactant ions has been investigated. This has been done by using the pure complex salt (polyion + surfactant ion) as a point of departure. Different parameters of the complex salt have been varied in a systematic way and the effect on structure and water miscibility has been investigated. READ MORE

19. New biodegradable polymers from renewable resources
Abstract : High molecular weight poly(ester-carbonate)s have beenprepared by a two-step chain-extension reaction performed onoligomeric αω-bishydroxyl-terminatedpoly(1,3-propylene succinate).αω-Bishydroxyl-terminated copolymeric oligomers of1,3-propylene succinate/1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene succinatewere obtained by thermal polycondensation of1,3-propanediol/1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol/succinic acidmixtures having different composition, and subsequently chainextended using phosgene as coupling agent, which leads toaliphatic/alicyclic copoly(ester-carbonate)s. 20. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial function : role of ubiquinol as antioxidant
Abstract : Over the last three decades it has been established that biquinone (coenzyme Q), in addition to its function as an electron and proton carrier in the respiratory chain, acts in its reduced form (ubiquinol) as an antioxidant. The main theme of this thesis is a study of the antioxidant function of ubiquinol in preparations of beef heart submitochondrial particles, which consist of inverted vesicular fragments of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
