1. Heat exposure and health outcomes in Costa Rican sugarcane harvesters
Abstract : Background The remarkably efficient mechanisms of the human body to maintain its core temperature of 37°C can be inadequate when harsh climatic conditions and excessive muscle movement lead to heat stress, dehydration and potential heat illness, ranging from minor symptoms such as fatigue to a potentially fatal heat stroke. Agricultural workers in the tropics are at high risk, which is expected to increase with climate change. READ MORE

2. Frame Analysis in Environmental Conflicts : The case of ethanol production in Brazil
Abstract : Governments and policy-makers are currently dealing with some key issues as energy security in countries dependent on oil imports; global economic development, including increased food production; and controlling global climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. The perception that biofuel could solve these challenges simultaneously has led to the implementation of policy and regulatory mechanisms on the mandatory use of biofuels, resulting in a sharp increase in biofuel production and consumption. 3. COMMERCIAL SUGARCANE FARMING AND RURAL YOUTH LIVELIHOODS IN EASTERN UGANDA
Abstract : Commercial farming is a pathway for pro-poor growth because of its economic linkages such as jobs and incomes. However, most of the available studies of commercial farming are largely generic, leaving a dearth of evidence about what it means for population categories such as the youth. READ MORE

4. Environmental Assessment of Emerging Routes to Biomass Based Chemicals The Case of Ethylene
Abstract : The production of bulk chemicals from biomass instead of fossil resources is perceived as one promising option to decrease society's environmental impact. However, though considerable research and development efforts aim at such production, it might take several more years before biomass based bulk chemicals are fully commercialized. READ MORE

5. Lignocellulosic Ethanol Production: Studies on Sugarcane Bagasse, Paja Brava, Wheat Straw, Quinoa Stalks and Curupaú
Abstract : Lignocellulosic biomass refers to plant material that is composed mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. These materials are today of large interest to researchers in the field of biofuel and bioenergy. READ MORE
