  1. 1. Studies of sulfatide expression in relation to beta cell function

    Author : Maria K. Blomqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : sulfatide; glycosphingolipid; insulin; beta cell; diabetes mellitus; animal models; ; beta cell line;

    Abstract : Previous studies have shown that the glycosphingolipid sulfatide (3´-sulfogalactosyl-ceramide) is present and functionally involved in pancreatic beta cells. In these cells, sulfatide is synthesised as two major isoforms, C16:0 and C24:0 sulfatide, with different length of the fatty acid chain of the ceramide moiety. READ MORE

  2. 2. Expression of sulfatide in rodent CNS - not only restricted to myelin

    Author : Zarah Pernber; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : sulfatide; glycosphingolipid; neurons; astrocytes; immunohistochemistry; brain; metachromatic leukodystrophy;

    Abstract : Sulfatide is an acidic glycosphingolipid and a component of myelin in the nervous system proposed to be involved in maintenance of the myelin structure and thereby its function. Sulfatide is also a commonly used marker for detection of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in cultures as well as in tissues. READ MORE

  3. 3. Distribution of glycosphingolipids in nervous tissue. Immunohistochemical and biochemical studies

    Author : Marie Molander-Melin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Glycosphingolipids; sulfatide; nervous tissue; immunohistochemical analyses; ; biochemical analyses; rafts.;

    Abstract : Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are highly enriched in cell membranes of the mammalian nervous system. Their biological functions are not clarified although recent findings have supported their existence in plasma membrane domains, enriched in cholesterol, sphingomyelin and GSLs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Investigation of immunological preconditions in MS patients "MS immunopathic trait"

    Author : Sara Haghighi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : multiple sclerosis; siblings; CSF; oligoclonal; cytokine; sulfatide; genetics; trait;

    Abstract : We examined 47 MS patients, 47 healthy siblings and 50 healthy unrelated individuals with blood and CSF analysis and found that 19 % (9/47) of healthy siblings of clinically definite multiple sclerosis patients had an intrathecal immunological reaction to ¡Ý 2 CSF-enriched OCB, in contrast to 4% (2/50) of the unrelated healthy controls. We termed this condition ¡°MS immunopathic trait¡±. READ MORE

  5. 5. Application of imaging TOF-SIMS in cell and tissue research

    Author : Katrin Richter; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : TOF-SIMS; imaging mass spectrometry; cryopreparation; ions; lipids; galactosylceramide; sulfatide; fatty acids;

    Abstract : This thesis is aimed at extending the use of TOF-SIMS (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) as an analytical tool in cell and tissue research. TOF-SIMS is a relatively new method that allows analysis of the chemical composition of sample surfaces. READ MORE
