  1. 11. Methods for Processing and Analysis of Biomedical TEM Images

    Author : Amit Suveer; Ida-Maria Sintorn; Carolina Wählby; Natasa Sladoje; Jari Hyttinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; image analysis; image processing; deep learning; transmission electron microscopy; denoising; super-resolution reconstruction; registration; detection; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) has the high resolving capability and high clinical significance; however, the current manual diagnostic procedure using TEM is complicated and time-consuming, requiring rarely available expertise for analyzing TEM images of the biological specimen. This thesis addresses the bottlenecks of TEM-based analysis by proposing image analysis methods to automate and improve critical time-consuming steps of currently manual diagnostic procedures. Abstract : Apoptosis is one of the most common types of cell death. Under physiological conditions, it plays an essential role in removal of damaged and potentially harmful cells. Excessive apoptosis has however been linked to a number of diseases including proteinuric kidney disease and DKD, and is believed to enhance the disease progression. READ MORE

  3. 13. The Human Vestibular Aqueduct, Endolymphatic Duct and Sac : A Morphological Study Using Micro-CT, Super Resolution Immunohistochemistry and Synchrotron Phase Contrast Imaging

    Author : Charlotta Kämpfe Nordström; Helge Rask-Andersen; Göran Laurell; Claes Möller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endolymphatic sac; endolymphatic duct; vestibular aqueduct; Meniere s disease; LVAS; micro-CT; synchrotron phase contrast imaging; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The inner ear lies sheltered in the temporal bone and consists of basically three parts: the cochlea (the hearing organ), the vestibular (the balance organ), and the endolymphatic duct (ED) and endolymphatic sac (ES). The ES and ED are located in a bony canal, the vestibular aqueduct (VA), located on the medial side of the vestibule. READ MORE

  4. 14. Quantitative bioimaging in single cell signaling

    Author : Kristoffer Bernhem; Hjalmar Brismar; Anita Aperia; Lena Scott; Christian Eggeling; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Super resolution imaging; fluoresence; bioimaging; cells; FRET; cluster analysis; labeling; image analysis.;

    Abstract : Imaging of cellular samples has for several hundred years been a way for scientists to investigate biological systems. With the discovery of immunofluorescence labeling in the 1940’s and later genetic fluorescent protein labeling in the 1980’s the most important part in imaging, contrast and specificity, was drastically improved. 5. 15. Alzheimer disease : a super-resolved picture of the amyloid β-peptide producing machinery

    Author : Yang Yu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, influencing 40 million patients in the world. Pathologically, AD is hallmarked by intracellular tau tangles and extracellular Amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) plaques. Aβ is generated from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its C-terminal fragment (APP-CTF). READ MORE
