  1. 1. Survey estimation for highly skewed data

    Author : Forough Karlberg; Chris Skinner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Extreme values; skewed populations; model-based inference; superpopulation; lognormal distribution; statistik; Statistics;

    Abstract : Estimation of the population total of a highly skewed survey variable from a small sample is problematic if straightforward methods are used since (i) when there are no extreme values in the sample, too small estimates will be obtained (ii) if extreme values are sampled, the estimates will become grotesquely large. Traditional methods for outlier treatment will usually compensate for outliers in the sample, thereby avoiding (ii), whereas the small negative bias of (i) will persist. READ MORE

  2. 2. Some Contributions to Statistical Disclosure Control

    Author : Michael Carlson; Mark Elliot; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Data dissemination; Data-swapping; Disclosure control; Poisson-inverse Gaussian; Risk-per-record; Superpopulation; Uniqueness; Mathematical statistics; Matematisk statistik; statistik; Statistics;

    Abstract : An important issue associated with the release of statistical data, is the possibility of disclosing individual information about respondents. Statistical disclosure control (SDC), is the discipline that deals with methods of producing statistical data that are safe enough to be released while retaining its analytical value and also methods of assessing the disclosures risks. 3. 3. Moment Estimation Using Extreme Value Methods

    Author : Joachim Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pareto distribution; mean estimation; heavy tailed distributions; telecommunication; m -dependence; superpopulation sampling; peaks over threshold; telecommunication;

    Abstract : The thesis is composed of three papers, all dealing with the application of extreme value methods to the problem of moment estimation for heavy-tailed distributions. In Paper A, an asymptotically normally distributed estimate for the expected value of a positive random variable with infinite variance is introduced. READ MORE

  4. 4. Estimating income inequality : large sample inference in finite populations

    Author : Arne Sandström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; order statistics and concomitant of order statistics; functionals; stochastic differentials; weighted empirical distribution function; income inequality; Gini coefficient;

    Abstract : During the last decades the interest in measuring income inequality has substantially increased. In this work we consider measures related to the Lorenz Curve, e g the Gini coefficient. These measures are decomposable^ g the inequality in disposable income can be assigned to various income sources. READ MORE

  5. 5. Essays on Sample Surveys : Design and Estimation

    Author : Edgar Bueno; Per Gösta Andersson; Maria Giovanna Ranalli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GREG estimator; mixture distribution; probability proportional to size sampling; sampling algorithms; sampling design; sampling strategy; survey sampling; stratified sampling; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : Sampling is a core stage in every survey. A sampling design carefully elaborated may imply not only a more accurate estimation of the parameters of interest, but also a reduction in the required sample size in a study. In this thesis we consider two particular but connected subjects. READ MORE
