1. Silicon Nanoribbon FET Sensors : Fabrication, Surface Modification and Microfluidic Integration
Abstract : Over the past decade, the field of medical diagnostics has seen an incredible amount of research towards the integration of one-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes, metallic and semiconducting nanowires and nanoribbons for a variety of bio-applications. Among the mentioned one-dimensional structures, silicon nanoribbon (SiNR) field-effect transistors (FET) as electro-chemical nanosensors hold particular promise for label-free, real-time and sensitive detection of biomolecules using affinity-based detection. 2. The effect of surface steps and oxides on the catalytic activity on model Pd and Rh catalysts
Abstract : A catalyst is a substance that can speed up the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being consumed. Catalysts are crucial for chemical production industries, where about 90% of all chemicals are produced using catalysts. READ MORE

3. Surface Studies of Model Systems relevant for Pd and Ag Catalysts
Abstract : This PhD thesis reports on investigations of the atomic scale structure of model catalysts relevant for the catalytic oxidation of CO and methane over Pd, and NOx reduction over silver-alumina, important reactions in automotive catalysts. By using complementary experimental techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, High Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Surface X-ray Diffraction, Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Infrared Spectroscopy, and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, combined with theoretical calculations, the work presented in this thesis aims at an atomistic characterization of the active sites for silver-alumina and Pd model catalysts which may help to the design of new and improved catalysts. 4. On Generation and Recombination in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin-Film Solar Cells
Abstract : The solar cell technology based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin-films provides a promising route to cost competitive solar electricity. The standard device structure is ZnO:Al/ZnO/CdS/CIGS/Mo films on a glass substrate, where the first three layers are n-type semiconductors with wide bandgaps, forming a pn-junction with the p-type CIGS absorber layer; the Mo layer serves as a back contact. 5. Advancements in Lithium-Based Batteries : Unraveling and Mitigating Performance-Limiting Phenomena in Negative Electrodes
Abstract : The development of lithium-based batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, has changed our daily lives significantly. The technologies first enabled by lithium-based batteries are now in turn creating a demand for better lithium-based batteries with higher energy densities and longer cycling lifetimes. READ MORE
