  1. 21. Water-Metal Surfaces : Insights from core-level spectroscopy and density functional theory

    Author : Theanne Schiros; Anders Nilsson; John Hemminger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : water; hydroxyl; metal; surfaces; x-ray spectroscopy; density functional theory; bonding; fuel cell; kemisk fysik; Chemical Physics;

    Abstract : Computational methods are combined with synchrotron-based techniques to analyze the structure and bonding of water and water plus hydroxyl at metal surfaces under UHV and at near-ambient conditions. Water-metal interaction plays a crucial role in a multitude of cosmic, atmospheric and biological phenomena as well as heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry and corrosion. READ MORE

  2. 22. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability

    Author : Yuanying Chen; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Carmen Prieto; Marco Marani; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; nutrient loads; hydro-climatic variability; hydrodynamics; solute transport; water quality.; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay. 3. 23. Water Quality in Swedish Lakes and Watercourses : Modeling the Intra-Annual Variability

    Author : Julia Hytteborn; Kevin H. Bishop; Andreas C. Bryhn; Johan Temnerud; Bergström Ann-Kristin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Total organic carbon; cyanobacteria; seasonality; water quality modeling; climate change; surface water; Earth Science with specialization in Environmental Analysis; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : Water quality is of great importance for ecosystems and society. This thesis characterized and modeled the variation in several key constituents of Swedish surface waters, with particular consideration given to intra-annual variability and sensitivity to climate change. READ MORE

  4. 24. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface

    Author : Eric Tyrode; Mark Rutland; Paul Davies; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sum Frequency Generation; SFG; VSFS; surfactant; adsorption; water; surface structure; hydration; surface tension; fluorosurfactants; liquid-air interface; poly ethylene oxide surfactants; surface molecular orientation; acetic acid.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 5. 25. Evaluation of Modern Irrigation Techniques with Brackish Water

    Author : Tarek Selim Aboulila; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Soil water; Soil Salinity; Drip irrigation; HYDRUS-2D 3D; El-Salam Canal; Egypt.;

    Abstract : Modern irrigation techniques are becoming increasingly important in water-scarce countries especially in arid and semiarid regions. Higher crop production and better water use efficiency are usually achieved by drip irrigation as compared to other irrigation methods. READ MORE
