  1. 1. Zooplankton response to cyanotoxins

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; cyanotoxins; maternal effects; algal toxins; zooplankton; tolerance; cyanobacteria;

    Abstract : Mass development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is common in many lakes and coastal waters worldwide as a result of an increased nutrient loading. These blooms of cyanobacteria are undesirable for several reasons; thick mats of algae and unpleasant odour reduces the recreational values, bad taste reduces the quality of drinking water and the potent toxins produced by some species of cyanobacteria endanger human health. 2. 2. Health-promoting intervention for community-dwelling older adults - Focusing on the concept of frailty and intervention outcome

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aged 80 and over; frail elderly; health promotion; self-rated health; activities of daily living; review; International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health; focus groups; randomized controlled trial;

    Abstract : Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to increase our understanding of the concept of frailty in relation to older adults, and to review and evaluate outcomes in health-promoting interventions for community-dwelling older adults. Methods: In study I, definitions of frailty applied in, the content and organisation in, and the effects of, health-promoting interventions for community-dwelling frail older persons were systematically reviewed using the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) as a structural framework. 3. 3. Population genetic analyses in the orchid genus Gymnadenia : a conservation genetic perspective

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Pia Mutikainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Genetic engineering; Orchidaceae; Gymnadenia; conservation; microsatellites; genetic structure; mating pattern; Genteknik; Genetic engineering including functional genomics; Genteknik inkl. funktionsgenomik; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : Small populations are facing a particular risk of extinction due to a lack of appropriate genetic diversity and associated negative effects, factors dealt with in the discipline of conservation genetics. Many orchid species exhibit characteristics that make them a perfect study object in the scope of conservation genetics. READ MORE

  4. 4. How do international norms travel? : Women’s political rights in Cambodia and Timor-Leste

    Author : Susanne Alldén; Cynthia Kite; Gunnel Gustafsson; Kathryn Hochstetler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : norm diffusion; women’s political rights; post-conflict statebuilding; Cambodia; Timor-Leste; norm entrepreneurs; capability to function.; statskunskap; political science;

    Abstract : How do international norms travel, via statebuilding efforts, into post-conflict settings, and how do international and national actors interact in this process? These are the main questions addressed in this thesis. The empirical focus is the spreading and rooting of the norm of women’s political rights in Cambodia and Timor-Leste, two countries in which international actors have played a significant role in statebuilding efforts. 5. 5. A Study of Grain Drift in C Stars : Theoretical Modeling of Dust-Driven Winds in Carbon-Rich Pulsating Giant Stars

    Author : Christer Sandin; Susanne Höfner; Bengt Gustafsson; Lee Anne Willson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; hydrodynamics; radiative transfer; instabilities; dust formation; stars: AGB and post-AGB; stars: mass-loss; stars: variables: general; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Theoretical Astrophysics; teoretisk astrofysik;

    Abstract : A major fraction of stars will pass through a short period of dramatic events in their final evolutionary stage. Low- to intermediate-mass stars, studied here, are stripped of their outer parts in a slow massive wind. This mass loss reshapes both the star and the surrounding medium. READ MORE
