  1. 1. Chromosomal β-lactamases in enterobacteria and in vivo evolution of β-lactam resistance

    Author : Sven Bergström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gram negative bacteria; ß-lactamase genes; divergence of neighbouring cperons; ß-lactamase hyperproduction; evolution of control sequences;

    Abstract : The ß-lactam antibiotics are the most important antibacterial agents in the treatment of infectious diseases. A severe problem in ß-lactam therapy is the emergence of ß-lactam resistant bacteria. Clinical ß-lactam resistance is most often due to the production of ß-lactamases. ß-lactamase genes reside either on plasmids or on the chromosome. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modeling Neural Stem Cell and Glioma Biology

    Author : Tobias Bergström; Karin Forsberg-Nilsson; Staffan Johansson; Sven Påhlman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural stem cell; integrins; glioma; PDGF; mast cell; Molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on neural stem cell (NSC) and glioma biology. I discuss how NSCs interact with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the stem cell niche, and investigate the consequences of deregulated Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) signaling for embryonic NSCs in transgenic mice. 3. 3. Immunopathogenesis of relapsing fever borreliosis

    Author : Marie Andersson; Sven Bergström; Betty P. Guo; Janis J. Weis; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Relapsing fever; Borrelia; mouse models; biological barriers; pathology; chemokines; cytokines; pregnancy; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Relapsing fever (RF) is caused by different species of Borrelia transmitted by soft ticks or by the human body louse. Illness is characterized by reappearing peaks of high concentrations of spirochetes in blood, concordant with fever peaks separated by asymptomatic periods. READ MORE

  4. 4. Infection biology of Chlamydia pneumoniae

    Author : Leslie Bailey; Sven Bergström; Peter Nordström; Anders Waldenström; Kenneth Fields; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Chlamydia pneumoniae; Type three secretion system; Bone; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : There are two main human pathogens in the family of Chlamydiaceae. Different serovars of Chlamydia trachomatis cause sexually-transmitted disease and eye infections whereas C. pneumoniae (TWAR) is a common cause of community-acquired respiratory infection. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structure and Function of the Borrelia burgdorferi Porins, P13 and P66

    Author : Mari Bonde; Sven Bergström; Melissa Caimano; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Borrelia; P13; P66; porin; protein complex; dissemination; osmotic stress;

    Abstract : Borrelia burgdorferi is an elongated and helically shaped bacterium that is the causal agent of the tick-borne illness Lyme disease. The disease manifests with initial flu-like symptoms and, in many cases, the appearance of a skin rash called erythema migrans at the site of the tick bite. READ MORE
