  1. 21. Role of planners and public participation in planning for biodiversity

    Author : Malgorzata Blicharska; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The European Union (EU) is committed to conserving biodiversity, both in terms of natural and cultural legacies, and also to limiting biodiversity loss. Relevant policies have underlined the importance of considering ecological and social issues, as well as the complex relations between the two spheres in conservation of biodiversity. READ MORE

  2. 22. Gall midge olfaction and its role in speciation

    Author : Tina Boddum; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : With the swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii) as our main model species, we study two types of olfactory cues that are of importance for gall midges: 1) the pheromones emitted by the female to attract the male; 2) and the host plant volatiles that the females use when finding a host for oviposition. We found that both the blend of compounds and the enantioisomeric form are important for male attraction in the wind tunnel and in the field. READ MORE

  3. 23. Social and environmental olfactory signals mediate insect behavioral ecology and evolution

    Author : Felipe Borrero; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Odors are essential in mediating insect reproductive behavior. Environmental odors help insects locate suitable feeding or egg-laying sites and avoid suboptimal hosts or dangerous habitats. Sex pheromones, on the other hand, are responsible for mate finding and elicit courtship and mating. READ MORE

  4. 24. A tale of two blights

    Abstract : Potato is the third most important food crop for human consumption. However, the production is plagued by several pests and pathogens causing yield reducing diseases. Estimations indicate that 17% of the global potato yield is lost due to pests and pathogens. READ MORE

  5. 25. The biology and ecology of Phytophthora infestans: the role of cell wall proteins in development, pathogenicity and potato defence activation

    Author : Maja Brus-Szkalej; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Phytophthora infestans was one of the first eukaryotic microbes to be implicated as the causal agent of a plant disease. Despite a relentless research effort over the last 150 years, it remains one of the most economically important phytopathogens today. READ MORE
