  1. 1. Systemic fungal diseases in natural plant populations

    Author : Anders Wennström; Lars Ericson; Peter G. Ayres; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systemic diseases; rust; smut; Puccinia minussensis; Lactuca sibirica; Puccinia pulsatillae; Pulsatilla pratensis; lateral growth; abiotic factors; disease transmission; Svampsjukdomar hos växter;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to study interactions between systemic fungal diseases and perennial plants. Using the systemic rust Puccinia minussensis on the host plant Lactuca sibirica, and the rust Puccinia pulsatillae on the host plant Pulsatilla pratensis, this thesis focused on: (i) the effects of systemic diseases on their hosts (ii) host and pathogen responses to abiotic factors, (iii) the importance of life history strategies for understanding host-pathogen interactions, and (iv) the evolutionary consequences of living in close associations. 2. 2. The genetics of systemic lupus erythematosus : Mapping of susceptibility loci for human SLE

    Author : Anna-Karin B. Lindqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Systemic lupus erythematosus; complex diseases; genetic susceptibility; linkage analysis; genome scan; candidate gene; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Medical Genetics; medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease affecting organs such as skin, jointsand kidneys. Characteristic for the disease is increased production of autoantibodies, in particular against dsDNA. Previous studies of SLE in mouse models and in humans indicate polygenic inheritance and genetic heterogeneity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms of Interferon-α Induction in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Author : Ullvi Båve; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnar V. Alm; Ingrid Lundberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Systemic lupus erythematosus; interferon inducer; apoptosis; autoantibodies; natural interferon-alpha producing cell; FcgammaRII; Sjögren´s syndrome; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an activated type I interferon (IFN) system with an ongoing IFN-α synthesis. This may be caused by circulating immune complexes, consisting of anti-DNA antibodies (Abs) and DNA, with IFN-α inducing capacity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of Autoantibodies in Systemic and Organ-Specific Autoimmune Disease

    Author : Filip Sköldberg; Olle Kämpe; Fredrik Rorsman; Lars Rönnblom; Eva Landgren; Marie Wahren-Herlenius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; autoantibodies; autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1; cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase; histidine decarboxylase; systemic lupus erythematosus; ahnak; CLLD4; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Molekylär medicin; Molecular Medicine;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the prototypic systemic autoimmune disease, whereas autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS1) is a rare autosomal disorder characterized by combinations of organ-specific autoimmune manifestations including hypoparathyroidism and intestinal dysfunction, and may serve as a model for organ-specific autoimmunity. Autoantibodies directed against proteins expressed in the affected tissues are found in both diseases. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immune Complex Regulated Cytokine Production in Rheumatic and Lymphoproliferative Diseases

    Author : Linda Mathsson; Johan Rönnelid; Bo Nilsson; Ann Kari Lefvert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; Immune complex; Cytokines; Rheumatic diseases; Lymphoproliferative diseases; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Immune complexes (ICs) are produced during normal immune responses and facilitate clearance of foreign antigens. ICs not efficiently cleared from the circulation can cause tissue damage. This might happen if ICs are formed with autoantibodies and autoantigens. READ MORE
