1. System analysis of a PV/T hybrid solar window
Abstract : A building-integrated multifunctional PV/T solar window was suggested and developed by Andreas Fieber. The solar window is constructed of PV cells laminated on solar absorbers placed in a window behind the glazing. READ MORE

2. Infection induced chronic inflammation and it's association with prostate cancer initiation and progression
Abstract : An association between cancer development and inflammation has long been suggested. Approximately 20% of all human cancers in adults are assumed to result from chronic inflammation. The aim of this thesis was to investigate if infection-induced chronic inflammation plays a role in prostate carcinogenesis. READ MORE

3. Evaluation of new active technology for low-energy houses
Abstract : Using energy at low-quality levels opens up new possibilities for low-energy houses. Low-quality energy can be heat at a temperature that is close to that of its surrounding, and can be used, for example, to pre-heat ventilation air or domestic hot water. READ MORE

4. Microfluidic biosensing systems based on enzymes, antibodies and cells
Abstract : The rapid developments within the life science and biotechnology areas put up ever-new demands on more sophisticated techniques and methods for chemical and biological analysis to reach deeper insight into the events at molecular level. Miniaturisation of assays and systems on microchips is one way to increase throughput and advance through parallel analysis lines, multiplexing and integration. READ MORE

5. Genetic and epigenetic characterization of pediatric high hyperdiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to analyze the genetic and epigenetic characteristics of pediatric high hyperdiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia (HeH ALL), the most common type of childhood malignancy. The three original articles presented in this thesis have addressed three major questions regarding HeH ALL: what are the genetic characteristics of the most common structural abnormality – dup(1q)? Are aberrant methylation patterns involved in leukemogenesis? How do diagnostic and relapse samples relate to each other genetically? In article I we found that the proximal breakpoints of dup(1q)-positive Burkitt lymphomas (BL) and pediatric HeH ALLs cluster close to the centromere, suggesting this region to be breakprone, and that five genes on 1q were significantly overexpressed and thus potentially pathogenetically important.
