  1. 1. Recognition requirements and regulatory events directing T cell responses

    Author : Martin Gullberg; Eva-Lotta Larsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; T cell growth factor production; Lyt-2-positive T suppressor cell; Lyt-2-positive cytotoxic T lymphocytes; activation requirements of T lymphocytes; blocking of T cell functions;

    Abstract : The present study has considered cellular and molecular requirements in T cell responses. The central role of T cell growth factors (TCGF) in T cell responses prompted us to study the regulatory events directing TCGF production in lectin stimulated cultures. READ MORE

  2. 2. Human intestinal T lymphocytes : a comparative analysis of phenotype and function in normal and inflamed mucosa

    Author : Silvia Melgar; Nadine Cerf-Bensussan; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human intestinal mucosa; intraepithelial lymphocyte; lamina propria lymphocyte; γδ T cell; regulatory T cell; cytotoxicity; cytokine; basal lymphoid aggregate; ulcerative colitis; Crohn s disease;

    Abstract : The epithelial lining of the gut must allow immediate contact with beneficial components as nutrients and normal microflora. At the same time it runs the constant risk of attack from pathogenic microbes and noxious agents. READ MORE

  3. 3. Paracrine and autocrine functions of PDGF in malignant disease

    Author : Tobias Sjöblom; Lars Holmgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Growth factors and their receptors are frequently activated by mutations in human cancer. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B and its tyrosine kinase receptor, the PDGF β-receptor, have been implicated in autocrine transformation as well as paracrine stimulation of tumor growth. 4. 4. T cell Tolerance - Cellular and molecular features of immune regulation

    Author : Susanna Grundström; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; serology; Immunology; JAK STAT.; NFkB; suppression; IL-2; superantigen; T cells; tolerance;

    Abstract : The immune system has evolved regulatory mechanisms in order to balance the effects of deleterious immune responses. Such immunological tolerance may be specifically acquired by lymphocytes, although different cells of the immune system participate in the induction and maintenance of tolerance. READ MORE

  5. 5. T cells in atherogenesis

    Author : Anna-Karin L Robertson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; T cells; transforming growth factor-beta; CD4; low-density lipoproteins; Th1 Th2; hypercholesterolemia;

    Abstract : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. READ MORE
