  1. 1. To defend or to offend? : Bacterial defence and competition systems

    Author : Danna Lee; Sanna Koskiniemi; Marjan van der Woude; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : bacterial defence systems; bacterial competition systems; toxin-antitoxin systems; colicin; contact-dependent growth inhibition CDI ; type VI secretion system T6SS ; Rearrangement hotspot Rhs proteins; CRISPR; horizontal gene transfer; antibiotic resistance; Salmonella; Enterotoxigenic E. coli ETEC ; probiotics; synthetic biology.;

    Abstract : Bacteria are prokaryotic microorganisms that can be found in all niches of the biosphere. Bacteria must constantly evolve in order to survive and adapt to their environments. Defence systems and competition systems play a vital role in ensuring the survival of bacteria. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Francisella pathogenicity island : its role in type VI secretion and intracellular infection

    Author : Lena Meyer; Anders Sjöstedt; Siobhan C. Cowley; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella; FPI; Type VI Secretion; Igl; DotU; VgrG; Pdp; microinjection; phagosomal escape; intracellular replication; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Intracellular bacteria have developed various mechanisms to enter and persist in host cells and, at the same time, to evade the host immune response. One such pathogen is Francisella tularensis, the etiological agent of tularemia. READ MORE

  3. 3. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Author : Barbara Weber; Debra L. Milton; James D. Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; Type VI secretion; stress response; virulence; skin colonization; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO. 4. 4. Evolutionary trajectories of Klebsiella pneumoniae : From experimental biofilm evolution to a hospital outbreak

    Author : Greta Zaborskytė; Linus Sandegren; Vaughn S. Cooper; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Klebsiella pneumoniae; evolution; experimental evolution; biofilms; infection; bacterial pathogens; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Bacterial evolution is closely intertwined with our lives. As their hosts, we shape how bacteria evolve by imposing numerous selective pressures during the time bacteria spend in our bodies. As a result, they adapt in various ways to colonize us or infect us better. READ MORE
