1. Into the Membrane and Beyond : Improving Membrane Protein Over-Expression in Escherichia coli
Abstract : Membrane proteins fulfil a wide variety of essential functions in the cell and many are (potential) drug targets. Since their natural abundance is usually very low, most membrane proteins have to be over-expressed for functional and structural studies. READ MORE

2. Protein interactions involved in viral replication characterized by T7 phage display
Abstract : Protein interactions are essential for many cellular processes. By utilizing protein-protein interactions, viruses can infect their host cells and replicate. Phage display can be used for identification and characterization of protein-protein interactions. READ MORE

3. From protein production to genome evolution in Escherichia coli
Abstract : The aim of my Ph.D. studies was to improve production yields of membrane- and secretory proteins in the widely used E. coli protein production strain BL21(DE3). READ MORE

4. Posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression in retroviruses and human papillomaviruses
Abstract : Human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) is the prototype of complex retroviruses, whereas human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are nonenveloped, cricular double-stranded DNA viruses. The HIV-1 Rev protein is a posttranscriptional regulator, which acts on its target RNA sequence termed the Rev-responsive element (RRE) to facilitate nuclear export of unspliced and partially spliced HIV-1 mRNAs, and to improve their stability and translatability. 5. Functional and structural characterization of the human mitochondrial helicase
Abstract : Mitochondria are the energy producing organelles of the eukaryotic cell. The human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a double stranded circular molecule of about 16 kb, usually present at 1000-10 000 copies per cell. The genome encodes 13 polypeptides involved in respiration, two ribosomal RNA s and a set of 22 transfer RNA s. READ MORE
