6. Optimization of Vehicle Structures under Uncertainties
Abstract : Advancements in simulation tools and computer power have made it possible to incorporate simulation-based structural optimization in the automotive product development process. However, deterministic optimization without considering uncertainties such as variations in material properties, geometry or loading conditions might result in unreliable optimum designs. READ MORE

7. Particulate Formation in GDI Engines
Abstract : The need to comply with stringent emission regulations while improving fuel economy and reducing criteria pollutant emissions from transportation presents a major challenge in the design of gasoline Direct Injection (DI) engines because of the adverse effects of ultrafine Particulate Number (PN) emissions on human health and other environmental concerns. With upcoming advances in vehicle electrification, it may be the case that electric vehicles completely replace all current vehicles powered by internal combustion engines ensuring zero emissions. 8. Fatigue improvement of steel bridges with high-frequency mechanical impact treatment
Abstract : This thesis investigates the performance of fatigue-improved welds with high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) for application on new bridges. Fatigue strength improvement with HFMI can enable lightweight design of bridges and allow the utilisation of the benefits of high-strength steels. READ MORE

9. Integration of Surface Acoustic Wave and Microfluidic Technologies for Liquid-Phase Sensing Applications
Abstract : This thesis discusses a new concept for construction of a novel SAW in-liquid sensor employing surface acoustic wave resonance (SAR) in a one-port configuration. In this concept, the reflective gratings of a one-port SAW resonator are employed as mass loading-sensing elements, while the SAW transducer is protected from the measurement environment, reducing power losses significantly. 10. Large-eddy simulation on the effects of fuel injection pressure on gasoline spray characteristics
Abstract : Increasing the injection pressure in gasoline direct injection engines has a substantial potential to reduce emissions while maintaining high efficiency in spark ignition engines. Present gasoline injectors operate at pressures of 20 to 30 MPa. READ MORE
