  1. 6. Brazilian land use policies and the development of ecosystem services

    Author : Flavio L. M. Freitas; Ulla Mörtberg; Gerd Sparovek; Martin Persson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Brazil; Land use policy; Forest protection; Ecosystem services; Biodiversity; Offsetting of legal reserves; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Concerns related to global environmental changes due to land use changes have been driving international communities towards more sustainable land use systems. Brazil is a country of global strategic importance in this matter considering that it is the nation with the largest extension of preserved tropical native vegetation, recognised for its ecosystem services and high and unique biodiversity. 2. 7. Lighting simulation for a more value-driven building design process

    Author : Anahita Davoodi; Thorbjörn Laike; Peter Johansson; Annika Moscati; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : lighting simulation; lighting design; lighting quality; energy efficiency; perception;

    Abstract : Concerns about global warming are increasing, hence, the urgency to cut carbon emissions. Reducing energy consumption, including lighting energy, is seen as the primary solution. Yet, solving the environmental factor should not come at the cost of other pillars of sustainable development. READ MORE

  3. 8. Re:ally re:think – seeking to understand the matters of sustainable fashion

    Author : Celinda Palm; Sarah Cornell; Tiina Häyhä; Fredrik Moberg; Mathilda Tham; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Academic studies of sustainable fashion, and the discourses of actors in business and policy, under-define fashion as a system by treating the social and ecological aspects of fashion separately. This reduces the potential for academic findings to provide knowledge useful for transformation of the fashion system and obstructs desired outcomes from policy and business responses to fashion’s negative social and environmental impacts. 4. 9. Dispersal and environmental impact of contaminants in organic rich, fibrous sediments of industrial origin in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Anna Apler; Ian Snowball; Karin Wiberg; Kevin Bishop; Sarah Josefsson; Lovisa Zillén; Ida-Maja Hassellöv; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiberbank; fiber-rich sediments; metals; persistent organic pollutants; pore water; bottom water; dispersal; sorption; pulp and paper; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : The health of the Baltic Sea is negatively affected by hazardous substances such as metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which include legacy pollutants that were banned decades ago, but still circulate in the ecosystem. Elevated levels of legacy pollutants, identified by HELCOM as key hazardous substances, have been found in accumulations of fibrous sediments, so-called fiberbanks and fiber-rich sediments, which derive from old pulp mills along the Swedish north coast.
