  1. 6. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth

    Author : Lars Björklund; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiration; Artificial; Pediatrics; Pediatri; Respiratory Function Tests; Pulmonary Surfactants; Newborn; Respiratory Distress Syndrome; Infant; Premature; Animals;

    Abstract : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout. 2. 7. Nasal administration of compounds active in the central nervous system : Exploring the olfactory system

    Author : Maria Dahlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; Nasal administration; olfactory pathway; cerebrospinal fluid; autoradiography; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : The nasal administration of drugs offers advantages over administration by intravenous injection. Drugs can be rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa, resulting in a rapid onset of action, and also avoiding degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism in the liver. 3. 8. Sialic acid-dependent binding specificities of Helicobacter pylori and influenza virus. Importance of different parts of the binding sequences

    Author : Petra Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : sialic acid; carbohydrates; Helicobacter pylori; influenza virus; binding specificities; glycosphingolipids;

    Abstract : Many viruses and bacteria adhere to host cell glycoconjugates in a specific manner, utilizing selected carbohydrate sequences. The aim of this work was to investigate at a molecular level the interactions of two important human pathogens, influenza virus and Helicobacter pylori, with sialylated carbohydrate structures. 4. 9. Thermal and hydraulic performance of compact brazed plate heat exchangers operating as evaporators in domestic heat pumps

    Author : Joachim Claesson; Björn Palm; Satish G. Kandlikar; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Applied mechanics; plate heat exchanger; evaporator; heat pump; flow boiling; pressure drop; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the performance of compact brazed plate heat exchangers (CBE) operating as evaporator in heat pump applications. The thesis, and the performances investigated, has been divided into three main sections; One zone evaporator performance; Two zone evaporator performance; and finally Local performance. READ MORE

  5. 10. Contact allergy to fragrances with a focus on oak moss absolute

    Author : Martin Mowitz; Yrkes- och miljödermatologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; contact allergy; allergic contact dermatitis; fragrance; patch test; repeated open application test;

    Abstract : The exposure to fragrances is widespread and contact allergy to fragrance substances affects 1–4% of the general population. Many fragrance substances are volatile and it can therefore be suspected that they may evaporate from petrolatum patch test preparations applied in test chambers. READ MORE
