  1. 1. Self-Assembly in Lipid-Protein Systems : Lung Surfactant, Stratum Corneum and Model Membranes

    Author : Jenny Andersson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lipid self-assembly; lung surfactant; stratum corneum; dehydrin; cholesterol; osmolytes; urea; TMAO; ssNMR; cSAXS;

    Abstract : This thesis explores lipid self-assembly and aims to give a broad picture of self-assembly structures in simple and complex lipid-protein systems. The systems studied are lung surfactant, stratum corneum and simple model membranes. The lung surfactant mixture lines the alveolus in our lungs and stabilises the air- tissue interface. READ MORE

  2. 2. Disease-causing Keratin Mutations and Cytoskeletal Dysfunction in Human Skin : In vitro Models and new Pharmacologic Strategies for Treating Epidermolytic Genodermatoses

    Author : Jean Christopher Chamcheu; Anders Vahlquist; Hans Törmä; Harshad Navsaria; Marie Virtanen; Torbjörn Egelrud; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidermolysis bullosa simplex; epidermolytic ichthyosis; genodermatoses; keratin; keratin mutation; keratinocytes; gene therapy; pharmacological therapy; immortalization; gene regulation; trimethylamine N-oxide TMAO ; sodium 4-phenylbutyrate 4-PBA ; tissue engineering; cell culture; heat shock proteins; MAP kinases; Dermatology and venerology; Dermatologi och venerologi; Dermatologi och venereologi; Dermatology and Venerology;

    Abstract : Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) and epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI) are rare skin fragility diseases characterized by intra-epidermal blistering due to autosomal dominant-negative mutations in basal (KRT5 or KRT14) and suprabasal (KRT1 or KRT10) keratin genes,  respectively. Despite vast knowledge in the disease pathogenesis, the pathomechanisms are not fully understood, and no effective remedies exist. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gut derived chronic inflammation in HIV-1 and chronic kidney disease : the role of the microbial metabolite TMAO and immunomodulatory effects of Vitamin D

    Author : Catharina Missailidis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Persistent immune activation with premature ageing and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are features shared by HIV-1 infected individuals and patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Underlying dysbiosis, a failing mucosal barrier function and microbial translocation (MT) are contributing factors in both conditions. READ MORE

  4. 4. CYP3A and lipids in health and disease : in females and males

    Author : Helena Bergström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Sex and gender differences in the pharmacokinetics-and dynamics of drugs, have been known for centuries. Women have been regarded as different - a 70 kg male has been the norm in medicine. READ MORE

  5. 5. Chronic kidney disease and early vascular ageing : pinpointing culprits of injury and targets for intervention

    Author : Sam Hobson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive non-communicable disease, and a clinical model of premature ageing. Approximately 1 in 10 people globally have CKD, defined as abnormalities of kidney structure and/or function that persist for more than threemonths. READ MORE
