  2. 12. Felling Forests from Afar: Quantifying Deforestation Driven by Agricultural Expansion and International Trade

    Author : Florence Pendrill; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Forest transitions; Land cover; Carbon footprints; Agriculture; Forestry; Carbon emissions; Land use; International trade; Deforestation;

    Abstract : Deforestation is a major source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and the largest threat to terrestrial biodiversity. Most forest loss is due to the expansion of agricultural land use increasingly driven by international demand for food, fuel and fibre. READ MORE

    Abstract : “Regional Policy in a Multiregional Setting: When the Poorest are Hurt by Subsidies” Regional subsidies have a positive short-term effect on the recipient regions, but as they alter migration patterns the long-term effects are less clear. This paper demonstrates using a three-region general equilibrium model that subsidising the poorest region may be to its detriment in the long term and thereby increase inter-regional inequality, if the subsidy draws firms from a nearby region that would function better as a production centre. 4. 14. Towards empirically grounded guidance for resource efficiency: Applying, developing and synthesising environmental assessments

    Author : Daniel Böckin; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : synthesis; decoupling; guidelines; resource efficiency; Circular Economy; 3D-printing; Life Cycle Assessment; waste hierarchy; business models; Circular Business Models;

    Abstract : Numerous solutions have been proposed to mitigate environmental damage, including resource efficiency and the vision of circular economy. Suggested solutions are often formulated as guidelines and heuristics like in the EU waste hierarchy, so-called R-hierarchies for resource efficiency and various guidelines for circular business models. 5. 15. Obtaining Accurate and Comprehensible Data Mining Models : An Evolutionary Approach

    Author : Ulf Johansson; Lars Niklasson; Tom Ziemke; Thorsteinn Rögnvaldsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Rule extraction; Ensembles; Data mining; Genetic programming; Artificial neural networks; Computer science; Datalogi; rule extraction; ensembles; data mining; genetic programming; artificial neural networks;

    Abstract : When performing predictive data mining, the use of ensembles is claimed to virtually guarantee increased accuracy compared to the use of single models. Unfortunately, the problem of how to maximize ensemble accuracy is far from solved. READ MORE
