  1. 6. Prevention of Experimental Cataract Induced by UVR

    Author : Martin Kronschläger; Per Söderberg; Madeleine Zetterberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cataract; ultraviolet radiation; apoptosis; thioltransferase; caffeine;

    Abstract : Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world and is defined by opacification of the normally transparent lens of the eye. The major avoidable cause of cataract is ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but no current strategies have been developed to prevent the onset of cataract. READ MORE

  2. 7. Factors influencing the turnover of olfactory receptor neurons

    Author : Maja-Lena Deckner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; olfactory bulb; olfactory epithelium; axotomy; regeneration; apoptosis; BBB; VEGF; blood vessels; trophic factor; BDNF; trkB; tenascin;

    Abstract : The olfactory system has a striking capacity for neuronal plasticity throughout life and the olfactory epithelium is able to generate both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the normal adult animal as well as after experimental injury. In contrast to primary sensory neurons, olfactory axons are able to cross the border between the PNS and CNS in the olfactory bulb after transection in the adult animal. READ MORE

  3. 8. Cell therapy for denervated tissue

    Author : Roine El-Habta; Ludvig J. Backman; Paul J. Kingham; Patrik Danielson; António Salgado; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose tissue-derived stem cell; cell therapy; denervation; differentiation; myoblast; peripheral nerve injury; proliferation; regeneration; skeletal muscle; stromal vascular fraction; survival; tendon; cellforskning; cell research; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Peripheral nerve injury results in denervation of tendons and muscles. The biology of denervated muscle has been well studied but little is known about the associated tendons. READ MORE

  4. 9. Pharmacological Studies of CHS 828 and Etoposide Induced Tumour Cell Death

    Author : Petra Martinsson; Stig Linder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Cancer chemotherapy; cell death; caspase; etoposide; CHS 828; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; klinisk farmakologi; Clinical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Antitumour properties of the cyanoguanidine CHS 828 and analogues were discovered in 1997. CHS 828 is presently in clinical phase I/II trials. This thesis encompasses in vitro studies of the kinetics and mode of cell death induced in the human cell line U-937 GTB, by CHS 828 and the standard antitumour drug etoposide. READ MORE

  5. 10. Molecular aspects of cellular radiosensitivity in small cell lung carcinoma

    Author : Florin Sirzén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : lung carcinoma; radiosensitivity; DNA double-strand breaks; DNA-dependent protein kinase; cell cycle checkpoints; apoptosis;

    Abstract : To clarify some important molecular aspects of radiosensitivity (RS) in small cell (SCLC) compared with non small cell (NSCLC) lung carcinoma, five studies focusing on DNA damage repair, cell cycle checkpoints and apoptosis were performed. As repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DNA dsb), a critical DNA lesion, may be an important determinant of cellular RS, induction and rejoining of DNA dsb were studied using pulsed field gel electrophoresis in a radiosensitive SCLC line, U-1285 and a radioresistant NSCLC line, U-1810 (paper I).
