  1. 1. Genetic Analyses of Bovid Remains and the Origin of Early European Cattle

    Author : Cecilia Anderung; Anders Götherström; Eske Willerslev; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular genetics; Genetik; Bos taurus; cattle; domestication; aDNA; mtDNA; SNPs;

    Abstract : The aurochs Bos primigenius, extinct since 1627, was the wild progenitor of cattle. It is believed that all European cattle originate from one domestication event in the Near East 10 000 years ago. READ MORE

  2. 2. Detecting Sex and Selection in Ancient Cattle Remains Using Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

    Author : Emma M Svensson; Anders Götherström; Juha Kantanen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aurochs; cattle; ancient DNA; SNP; pyrosequencing; selection; Bos taurus; Historical osteology; Historisk osteologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : All contemporary taurine cattle originated some 10,000 years ago when their wild ancestor, the aurochs, was domesticated in the Near East. Although the aurochs was widespread also in Europe, there is no evidence for a local domestication. The aurochs has been extinct since 1627 and therefore little is known about its biology. READ MORE

  3. 3. Population structure and phenotypic characterization as a basis for conservation and sustainable use of Reyna Creole Cattle in Nicaragua

    Author : Roldan Corrales; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The Reyna Creole cattle in Nicaragua is a local breed originating from the Bos taurus cattle brought to Latin America during the Spanish colonization in the fifteenth century. Reyna Creole cattle are today found in five herds. The primary use of the breed is to produce milk. The breed comprises about 650 purebred female animals. READ MORE

  4. 4. Population level genome-wide association studies in dairy cattle

    Author : Xiaowei Mao; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In recent years, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has become a dominant tool for detecting genetic architectures for complex traits. Thousands of associated genetic variants have been reported. However, the resolution of these studies was limited by the available marker density for the quantitative trait loci (QTL) region. 5. 5. Milk progesterone measures to improve genomic selection for fertility in dairy cows

    Author : Amabel Tenghe; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Improved reproductive performance has a substantial benefit for the overall profitability of dairy cattle farming by decreasing insemination and veterinary treatment costs, shortening calving intervals, and lowering the rate of involuntary culling. Unfortunately, the low heritability of classical fertility traits derived from calving and insemination data makes genetic improvement by traditional animal breeding slow. READ MORE
