  1. 1. Subsystems of the basal ganglia and motor infrastructure

    Author : Iman Kamali Sarvestani; Örjan Ekeberg; Jeanette Hällgren-Kotaleski; Christelle Baunez; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Basal Ganglia; Action Selection; Motor Learning; Tectum; Superior Colliculus; Mesencephalic Locomotor Region; Reticulospinal Neurons; Computational Models;

    Abstract : The motor nervous system is one of the main systems of the body and is our principle means ofbehavior. Some of the most debilitating and wide spread disorders are motor systempathologies. In particular the basal ganglia are complex networks of the brain that control someaspects of movement in all vertebrates. READ MORE

  2. 2. The optic tectum of the salmon:site of interaction of neurohormonal photoperiodic and neural visual signals. The GABAergic neuronal system and melatonin receptors

    Author : Marie Anzelius; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal anatomy; melatonin receptors; GABA; optic tectum; fish; brain; animal morphology; Djurs anatomi och morfologi;

    Abstract : Melatonin is a neurohormone which mediates photoperiodic signals from the pineal organ to the brain. GABA (g-aminobutyric acid) is the major inhibitory transmitter in the central nervous system. READ MORE

  3. 3. Palynology of Hypochoeridinae and Scolyminae (Compositae)

    Author : Gamal El-Ghazaly; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Pollen grains of 35 species representing all 7 genera of the subtribe Hypochoeridinae, and Scolymus hispanicus of the subtribe Scolyminae were examined by LM, SEM and TEM. The pollen grains of annual species are usually smaller than those of perennial ones. The Hypochoeridinae possesses essentially tricolpororate,echinolophate pollen grains. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neurotrophic factors and their receptors in the developing avian retina and its tectal target

    Author : Miriam Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Developmental Neurosciences; medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi;

    Abstract : Neurotrophic factors and their receptors are crucial for the formation of neuronal connections and for the neuronal survival during embryonic development of the nervous system. This has particularly been shown by studies of the PNS. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evolution of the subcortical circuits controlling goal-directed behaviour

    Author : Marcus Stephenson-Jones; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to reconstruct the minimal neural hardware that vertebrates use for goal-directed behaviour. By studying lamprey, one of the phylogenetically oldest vertebrates, we were able to identify the neural circuitry that has been conserved since jawed and jawless vertebrates diverged over 560 million years ago.
