  1. 6. Combustion Valve Wear : A Tribological Study of Combustion Valve Sealing Interfaces

    Author : Peter Forsberg; Staffan Jacobson; Rob Dwyer-Joyce; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Combustion valves; wear; tribofilm; test rig; combustion residue; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : The exhaust valve system of combustion engines experiences a very complex contact situation of frequent impact involving micro sliding, high and varying temperatures, complex exhaust gas chemistry and possible particulates, etc. In addition, the tribological situation in the exhaust valve system is expected to become even worse due to strict future emission regulations, which will require enhanced combustion and cleaner fuels. 2. 7. Tribology at the Cutting Edge : A Study of Material Transfer and Damage Mechanisms in Metal Cutting

    Author : Julia Lundberg Gerth; Urban Wiklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Tribology; Metal cutting; Gear hobbing; Wear; Coating; Residual stress; Material transfer; Steel; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : The vision of this thesis is to improve the metal cutting process, with emphasis on the cutting tool, to enable stable and economical industrial production while using expensive tools such as hobs. The aim is to increase the tribological understanding of the mechanisms operating at a cutting edge and of how these can be controlled using different tool parameters. READ MORE

  3. 8. Tribology of Metal-Graphite Composites : A Study of Sliding Electrical Contact Surfaces

    Author : Martina Grandin; Wiklund Urban; Staffan Jacobson; Ulf Jansson; Christian Holzapfel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tribology; tribofilm; surface analysis; wear; friction; electrical contacts; metal-graphite; contact resistance; cross-section; nanocomposite coating; copper; silver; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : An environmentally sustainable production of electrical power is important for preserving the earth’s natural resources. In order to utilize this power as efficiently as possible, it is of great importance to minimize the losses, for example in sliding electrical contacts. READ MORE

  4. 9. Additive Manufacturing of Ni-Fe Superalloys : Exploring the Alloying Envelope and the Impact of Process on Mechanical Properties

    Author : Carl Johan Hassila; Urban Wiklund; Staffan Jacobson; Johan Moverare; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Additive manufacturing; alloying for AM; PBF-LB; microstructure; tensile and impact testing; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : Additive manufacturing of metals has received a lot of attention in the last decade as this family of manufacturing processes allows the manufacturing of complicated geometries which would be difficult to produce using conventional manufacturing techniques. Additive manufacturing of the Ni-Fe based superalloys 625 and 718 using the Powder Bed Fusion – Laser Beam (PBF-LB) process is facilitated by the fact that these alloys were developed as weldable alternatives to other high-strength, high-temperature Ni-based superalloys. 5. 10. The Positive Effect of Nitrogen Alloying of Tool Steels Used in Sheet Metal Forming

    Author : Irma Heikkilä; Staffan Jacobson; Sture Hogmark; Pavel Krakhmalev; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : galling; nitrogen; tool steel; sliding contact; metal forming; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : Sheet metal forming processes are mechanical processes, designed to make products from metal sheet without material removal. These processes are applied extensively by the manufacturing industry to produce commodities such as heat exchangers or panels for automotive applications. They are suitable for production in large volumes. READ MORE
