  1. 11. Effects of facilitation and competition on oak seedlings : using shrubs as nurse-plants to facilitate growth and reduce browsing from large herbivores

    Author : Anna M Jensen; Magnus Löf; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Plant–plant interactions have been indicated as a potential means to facilitate oak seedling establishment and reduce herbivory when restoring oak forests. The aim of this thesis was to investigate mechanisms and outcomes of competitive and indirectly facilitative interactions between oak (Quercus robur and Q. READ MORE

  2. 12. Promoting natural regeneration of oak by manipulating disturbance

    Author : Linda Petersson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Oak regeneration is thought to be promoted by natural disturbance and past management practices that create semi-open conditions, such as periodic livestock grazing and lowintensity fire. The overall goal of this thesis was to examine whether disturbance factors can promote natural oak regeneration. READ MORE

  3. 13. Plant colonization of oak plantations - the interactive effects of local environment and land-use history

    Author : Karin Valtinat; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen mineralization; Phosphorus; Plant ecology; Växtekologi; Soil acidity; Seed sowing; Dispersal limitation; Species diversity; Indicator species analysis; Functional groups; Succession; Understory vegetation; Land-use history; Temperate forest;

    Abstract : In Europe, only small fragments of deciduous woodlands remain intact and species dependent on this ecosystem have declined. In southern Sweden, a shifting trend during the 20th century, with more afforestations on former arable land, resulted in new oak stands. These new stand are either on former arable fields or on continuously forested land. READ MORE

  4. 14. Achieving carbon isotope mass balance in northern forest soils, soil respiration and fungi

    Author : Björn Boström; Alf Ekblad; Phil Ineson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 13C; Carbon cycle; Ectomycorrhizal fungi; Forest soil; Microbial respiration; Soil respiration; Stable isotopes; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Northern forests contain a large part of the global terrestrial carbon pool and it is unclear whether they will be sinks or sources for atmospheric carbon if the climate warms as predicted. Stable isotope techniques provide unique tools to study the carbon cycle at different scales but the interpretation of the isotope data is impaired by our inability to close the carbon isotope mass balance of ecosystems. 5. 15. On the investigation of chemical parameters reflecting microbial activity linked to nutrient availability in forest soil

    Author : Madelen Olofsson; Dan Bylund; Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson; Bjarne W. Strobel; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boreal forest; electrospray ionization; fungal biomass; hydrophilic interaction chromatography; hydroxamate siderophores; liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry; mineral amendment; aromatic acids; podzol soil;

    Abstract : As agrarian society developed, the most fertile soils able to sustain the nutritional requirements needed for high crop yield were assigned to farming, while the more penurious soils were left to uphold the forest ecosystems. Some temperate forests are developed on acidic soils considered to be nutrient poor, as much of the inorganic nutrients are entrapped in poorly weatherable soil minerals and not easily accessed by plant roots.
