  1. 1. Mechanisms of immune escape in EBV associated malignancies : Hodgkin's disease and Burkitt's lymphoma

    Author : Teresa Frisan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Epstein-Barr virus; tumor immune escape; antigen presentation; cytotoxic T lymphocytes;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is focused on the analysis of the mechanisms operating in the immune escape of two Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated tumors: Hodgkin's Disease (HD) and Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). EBV positive HD tumor cells express at least 3 viral proteins: the EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA)1, the latent membrane proteins (LMP)1 and LMP2A. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of bacterial genotoxins on immune modulation, chronic inflammation and cancer development

    Author : Anna Bergonzini; Teresa Frisan; Maria Fällman; Steffen Backert; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : The intestinal microbiome of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colorectal cancer patients is enriched in genotoxin-producing bacteria, which cause DNA damage in the host cells.Genotoxins have recently been identified as a novel family of effectors produced by pathogenic and commensal bacteria. 3. 3. Host-bacteria interactions : Host cell responses and bacterial pathogenesis

    Author : Nele de Klerk; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Teresa Frisan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Host-bacteria interaction; Helicobacter pylori; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Lactobacillus; Epithelial cells; Macrophages; EGR1; Amphiregulin; SabA; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach, where it causes gastritis that may develop into peptic ulcer disease or cancer when left untreated. Neisseria gonorrhoeae colonizes the urogenital tract and causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on cell wall recycling and modification in Gram-negative bacteria

    Author : Michael C. Gilmore; Felipe Cava; Peter A Lind; Teresa Frisan; Jean-François Collet; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptidoglycan recycling; bacterial cell wall; antibiotics; Agrobacterium tumefaciens; Escherichia coli; Legionella pneumophila; mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The bacterial cell wall is made from peptidoglycan (PG), a heteropolymer which forms a bag-like exoskeleton that envelopes the cell. PG is constantly remodelled during growth and division, and in response to environmental stimuli. READ MORE

  5. 5. Roles of secreted bacterial factors in modulation of host cell signalling

    Author : Eric Toh; Sun Nyunt Wai; Teresa Frisan; Staffan Bohm; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteria-host interaction; motility-associated killing factor A; outer membrane vesicles; cytolysin A; phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase alpha; enhancer of zeste homologue 2; epigenetic modulation; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Pathogenic bacteria employ several secretion systems to release or inject virulence factors that may alter host cell processes, generate a replicative niche, and aid bacterial survival in adverse environments. This thesis presents my investigations on how bacterial factors can modulate host cell signalling mechanisms. READ MORE
