1. Kinetic and thermodynamic modelling of ternary nanowire growth
Abstract : Among nanoscale structures of different shapes and dimensions nanowires are one of the most promising because of its truly unique properties different from their bulk counterparts. The energy quantization, perfect defect-free structure, and the possibility to grow them within the miscibility gap in combination with the benefits of bottom-up design and the possibility of integration on silicon substrates make nanowires ideal candidates for applications in optoelectronics, biotechnology and energy harvesting. 2. Phase Equilibria and Structures of Oppositely Charged Polymers and Surfactants in Water
Abstract : A new approach to the study of aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polymers and surfactants has been introduced. Pure polyion-surfactant ion complex salts have been synthesized and used as the point of departure. The elimination of the simple ions reduces the number of components in the mixtures, thus greatly simplifying the system. READ MORE

3. Coordination Chemistry of Monocarboxylate and Aminocarboxylate Complexes at the Water/Goethite Interface
Abstract : This thesis is a summary of five papers with focus on adsorption processes of various monocarboxylates and aminocarboxylates at the water/goethite interface. Interaction of organic acids at the water/mineral interfaces are of importance in biogeochemical processes, since such processes have potential to alter mobility and bioavailability of the acids and metal ions. 4. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model
Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE

5. Realization of Complex III-V Nanoscale Heterostructures
Abstract : Low-dimensional III-V semiconductor nanoscale structures grown by epitaxial processes have emerged as a new class of materials with great promise for various device applications. This thesis describes explorations into the heteroepitaxial growth of III-V semiconductor materials in combination with other III-V materials and in combination with the commonly used Si material, in both thin layer and nanowire geometries.
