  1. 1. Evolutionary ecology of arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) : Intra- and interspecific interactions in circumpolar populations

    Author : Johan Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Arctic char; Salvelinus alpinus; biogeography; niche; life history; population ecology; intra- and interspecific interactions; cannibalism; competition; landlocked; marginal populations; species border; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines a suite of ecological and genetic mechanisms influencing the fundamental and realized niche borders of European and North American populations of the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) species complex in allopatry as well as in sympatry with brown trout (Salmo trutta) or brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). 2. 2. Ecology across Boundaries : Food web coupling among and within ecosystems

    Author : Pia Bartels; Peter Eklöv; Lars J. Tranvik; Daniel E. Schindler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; cross-ecosystem; food web; habitat coupling; terrestrial-aquatic linkages; subsidy; allochthonous; lake ecosystem; population divergence; trait variation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Cross-boundary movements of energy and material are ubiquitous. Freshwater ecosystems receive nutrients, dissolved, and particulate organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, whereas terrestrial ecosystems mainly receive prey organisms and detritus deposited by physical processes such as floods from freshwater ecosystems. 3. 3. The importance of terrestrial carbon in plankton food webs

    Author : Cesar Bolivar Daniel; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; lakes; carbon; zooplankton; Spumella elongata; Poterioochromonas malhamensis; flagellates; bacteria; stable isotopes; photochemistry; autochthonous; DOC; allochthonous; plankton; Ekologi; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : Allochthonous substances, i.e. produced in terrestrial ecosystems, are known to fuel bacterial production in humic lakes. I observed that allochthonous carbon subsidizes bacteria even at high levels of phytoplankton biomass. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ecology, sexual selection and variable mating tactics in fallow deer (Dama dama)

    Author : Cheryl Jones Fur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates ecological and evolutionary mechanisms behind the variation in male mating behaviour in fallow deer (Dama dama) populations. Two Swedish populations of fallow deer were studied, a semi-wild enclosed population on the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea (Ottenby), and a deer farm located north of Uppsala (Bälinge). READ MORE

  5. 5. Variation in Pseudorchis albida s.l. (Orchidaceae) and Carex capitata s.l. (Cyperaceae) : Morphology, genetic diversity, ecology and systematics

    Author : Lars-Gunnar Reinhammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Pseudorchis; Carex; morphologic variation; allozymes; immigration history; regeneration niche; biodiversity; ordinations; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; systematisk botanik; Systematic Botany;

    Abstract : In the Scandinavian flora, several species-pairs where one member is an alpine species andthe other is a closely related lowland species, have been described. The aim of this studywas to investigate two such examples, viz. Pseudorchis albida s.s. READ MORE
