    Author : Tommy Eriksson; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; protein binding; blood distribution; stereoselective pharamacokinetics; pharmacokinetic modelling; oral administration; intravenous administration; chiral inversion; stereospecific assay; HPLC; Thalidomide; hydroxylated metabolites; enantiomers; in vitro kinetics; sedative effects; concentration-effect relationship.; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : Thalidomide has a chiral center and the racemate of (+)-(R) and (-)-(S)-thalidomide was introduced as a hypnotic/sedative drug in 1957. In 1961 it was withdrawn due to teratogenicity and neuropathy. There is a growing interest in thalidomide treatment of immunomodulatory diseases. READ MORE

  2. 2. Experimental modulation and suppression of anti-allograft immune response

    Author : Öyvind Östraat; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; linomide; leflunomide; cyclophosphamide; mycophenolate mofetil; azathioprine; thalidomide; cyclosporin A; ciprofloxacin; flow cytometry; production; IL-2; Rat cardiac transplantation; allograft; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : Abstract The objective of this investigation was to characterise the immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive effects of single drug treatment and the potential synergistic or additive effects of combined treatment with the focus on ciprofloxacin, thalidomide, mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine, cyclophosphamide or leflunomide added to cyclosporin A (CyA). A rat cardiac transplant model was used to study graft survival and the influence on lymphocytes was evaluated by in vitro tests. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies of anemia in the myelodysplastic syndromes

    Author : Martin Jädersten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Myelodysplasia; growth factors; Cox regression; delayed entry; left truncation; mortality; international prognostic scoring system; IPSS; who-classification based prognostic scoring system; WPSS; thalidomide analogue; IMiD; hematopoietic stem cell; adhesion; stroma; matrix; osteonectin; matricellular protein; NPM1; immunohistochemistry.;

    Abstract : Background: The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) constitute a heterogeneous group of malignant bone marrow disorders, characterized by chronic anemia and increased risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The first line therapy of anemia in MDS is erythropoietin (EPO) with or without granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). READ MORE

  4. 4. Leishmania and HIV-1 interaction : immunopathogenic mechanisms

    Author : Dawit Wolday; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Both Leishmania and HIV can infect and multiply in macrophages, and both can dysregulate the T-helper (Th) immune system. This thesis was, therefore, undertaken to unravel some of the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms of the interaction of the two pathogens. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biological markers and treatment as prognostic factors in multiple myeloma

    Author : Katarina Uttervall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable disease with an increasing number of treatment options. The introduction of what are called novel drugs (bortezomib, lenalidomide and thalidomide) was an important step. READ MORE
