    Abstract : This thesis poses the question ‘What is the critique of democracy in Plato’s Republic?’ It is not the first to do so. But contrary to standard readings, this thesis does not assume neither epistemological nor elitist explanations. Rather, it sees the Kallipolis, ‘the beautiful city in words’ as predicated on a particular anthropology. READ MORE

  2. 2. Light scattering and absorption in pigmented coatings : Theory and experiments

    Author : William E. Vargas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Solid State Physics; fasta tillståndets fysik;

    Abstract : Radiative transfer models are used to describe optical properties of polymericthick films containing spherical inhomogeneities with sizes comparable to thewavelength of the incident radiation. From Lorenz-Mie theory various parametersrelated to elastic light scattering and absorption by single particles are calculated, i.e. READ MORE

  3. 3. Robust inference of gene regulatory networks : System properties, variable selection, subnetworks, and design of experiments

    Author : Torbjörn E. M. Nordling; Elling W Jacobsen; Rolf Findeisen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; network inference; reverse engineering; variable selection; model selection; feature selection; subset selection; system identification; system theory; network theory; subnetworks; design of experiments; perturbation experiments; gene regulatory networks; biological networks;

    Abstract : In this thesis, inference of biological networks from in vivo data generated by perturbation experiments is considered, i.e. deduction of causal interactions that exist among the observed variables. Knowledge of such regulatory influences is essential in biology. READ MORE

  4. 4. A pragmatist theory of design : The impact of the pragmatist philosophy of John Dewey on architecture and design

    Author : Leif E. Östman; Jerker Lundequist; Richard Buchanan; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Classical archaeology and ancient history; design; design theory; design knowledge; avant-garde; pragmatist philosophy; Antikens kultur och samhällsliv; Classical archaeology and ancient history; Antikens kultur och samhälle;

    Abstract : This study is an inquiry into design-theoretical aspects of architectural design in Finland based mainly on the pragmatist philosophy of John Dewey. The study comprises two case studies. The . rst case deals with a young family designing their future home – a detached house built from prefabricated components – in cooperation with an architect. 5. 5. Theory of Disordered Magnets

    Author : Oleg E. Peil; Börje Johansson; Hubert Ebert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; disordered alloys; magnetic alloys; spin glasses; ab initio calculations; Monte Carlo methods; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Studying magnetic properties of disordered alloys is important both for the understanding of phase transformations in alloys and from the point of view of fundamental issues of magnetism in solids. Disorder in a magnetic system can result in unconventional magnetic structures, such as spin glass, which have rather peculiar features. READ MORE
