11. Targeting Early Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease in a Transgenic Model
Abstract : The Arctic mutation causes early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and makes amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides more prone to form Aβ protofibrils. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the mechanisms of the Arctic mutation in vivo, and to use transgenic models to determine the role of early intermediates of Aβ aggregation, like protofibrils, in the pathogenesis. 12. Studies on medical and immunological intervention in HIV-1 infection
Abstract : The very first HIV-1 infected patients who received antiretroviral combination therapy (HAART) were severely ill and had very low CD4+ T cell counts. We describe a group of severely ill HIV- I infected patients monitored for the first two years of their HAART. READ MORE

13. Unraveling the role of NOTCH3 dysfunction in disease and for therapy development : a focus on CADASIL
Abstract : The Notch signaling pathway, including the Notch3 receptor, is involved in many pivotal contexts of cell signaling and cell fate determination processes during development and in adulthood. Different mutations in the NOTCH3 receptor, which is highly expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), are associated with various diseases, including developmental disorders, several forms of cancer, and vascular dementia. 14. Posttranslational modification of collagen type II : effects on antigen-specific T-cell tolerance and autoreactivity in collagen-induced arthritis
Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting peripheral joints in approximately 1% of the world population. Immunization of susceptible strains with CII, leads to development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), an animal model for RA. READ MORE

15. Effector mechanisms of immunity in atherosclerosis
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a disease of the medium and large sized arterial vessels, characterized by cholesterol deposition, inflammation and fibrosis. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles carrying cholesterol are trapped within the arterial wall. READ MORE
