  1. 1. Exploring the diversity and evolution of giant viruses in deep sea sediments using genome-resolved metagenomics

    Author : Disa Bäckström; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Anna J. Szekely; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metagenomics; binning; viruses; NCLDV; Megavirales; viral evolution.;

    Abstract : Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on this planet, which is impressive considering that they are completely dependent on their hosts for reproduction. Recently the idea of what viruses are has changed dramatically, with the discovery of giant viruses that belong to the Nucleocytoplasmic Large DNA Viruses (NCLDV), such as Mimiviridae, Marseilleviridae, and the proposed families Pandoraviruses, and Pithoviruses. 2. 2. Genomic and evolutionary exploration of Asgard archaea

    Author : Eva F. Caceres; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Simonetta Gribaldo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : archaea; Asgard; eukaryogenesis; metagenomics; genome binning; phylogenetics; phylogenomics; comparative genomics; gene tree-species tree reconciliation; ancestral reconstruction; long-read metagenomics;

    Abstract : Current evolutionary theories postulate that eukaryotes emerged from the symbiosis of an archaeal host with, at least, one bacterial symbiont. However, our limited grasp of microbial diversity hampers insights into the features of the prokaryotic ancestors of eukaryotes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Expanding the Chlamydiae tree : Insights into genome diversity and evolution

    Author : Jennah E. Dharamshi; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Alexander Probst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PVC superphylum; Chlamydiae; chlamydia; intracellular; symbiosis; endosymbiont; pathogen; marine sediment; sponge microbiome; metagenomics; uncultured microbial diversity; phylogenomics; microbial evolution; eukaryote evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Chlamydiae is a phylum of obligate intracellular bacteria. They have a conserved lifecycle and infect eukaryotic hosts, ranging from animals to amoeba. Chlamydiae includes pathogens, and is well-studied from a medical perspective. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploration of microbial diversity and evolution through cultivation independent phylogenomics

    Author : Joran Martijn; Thijs J.G. Ettema; Andrew Roger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cultivation independent genomics; metagenomics; single-cell genomics; metagenomic binning; phylogenetics; phylogenomics; phylogenetic artefacts; comparative genomics; gene tree-species tree reconciliation; rRNA amplicon sequencing; Tara Oceans; origin of mitochondria; Alphaproteobacteria; Rickettsiales; Haloarchaea; endosymbiosis; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Our understanding of microbial evolution is largely dependent on available genomic data of diverse organisms. Yet, genome-sequencing efforts have mostly ignored the diverse uncultivable majority in favor of cultivable and sociologically relevant organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Novel insights into protist diversity and niche adaptation using single cell transcriptomics

    Author : Henning Onsbring; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Alastair Simpson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Protists; microbial eukaryotes; cultivation-independent methods; single-cell RNA sequencing; phylogenomics; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Protists are a polyphyletic group of microbes that represents the vast majority of eukaryotic diversity. Despite this, most sequencing efforts targeting eukaryotes have been focused on animals, fungi and plants. READ MORE
