  1. 1. Aspects of Postoperative Pain Relief with Special Emphasis on Epidural Analgesia and Major Non-Cardiac Surgery

    Author : Per Flisberg; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensivvård; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; respiratory depression.; adverse effects; intravenous morphine; thoracic epidural; : Postoperative pain; long-term treatment; Anestesiologi;

    Abstract : Postoperative pain relief with opioids after major non-cardiac surgery may give rise to adverse effects. The fear of dangerous side effects may therefore limit the optimal use of different treatment modalities in surgical wards. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microdialysis and Intensive Care. Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Per Ederoth; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anaesthesiology; traumatic brain injury; glucose; glycerol; lipolysis; epidural; postoperative analgesia; experimental pancreatitis; human; blood-brain barrier; morphine; pharmacokinetics; Microdialysis; intensive care; Anestesiologi; intensivvård;

    Abstract : Microdialysis was used to monitor local concentrations of energy metabolites in different organs, and to study the pharmacokinetics of morphine over the blood-brain barrier in intact and injured brain tissue in conditions treated in the Intensive Care Unit. After major abdominal or thoracoabdominal surgery, postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia resulted in higher glycerol concentrations in the deltoid subcutaneous adipose tissue, implying increased lipolysis, on the third postoperative day as compared to intravenous infusion of morphine, possibly due to a locally increased sympathetic tone. 3. 3. Optimization of the perioperative anaesthetic care for prostate cancer surgery : clinical studies on pain, stress response and immunomodulation

    Author : Federica Fant; Anil Gupta; Kjell Axelsson; Swen-Olof Andersson; Sigridur Kalman; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Radical retropubic prostatectomy; epidural analgesia; patientcontrolled local anaesthesia; patient-controlled analgesia; surgical stress response; local and general inflammatory reaction; immune response; Anaesthesiology; Anestesiologi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common cancer form in men. Surgery is the treatment of choice for localized form of PC and half of all surgical procedures are radical retropubic prostatectomies (RRP). READ MORE

  4. 4. Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Surgical Care

    Author : Kristofer Bjerså; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : International and national use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is high in the general population and among patients. The level of knowledge about CAM among health care professions is low, but an interest in receiving education about this field has been observed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lung function after cardiac surgery : With special reference to atelectasis and ventilation-perfusion relationships

    Author : Arne Tenling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Cardiac surgery; thoracic epidural analgesia; vital capacity manoeuvre; computed tomography; ventilation-perfusion relationships; gas exchange; atelectasis; respiratory inductive plethysmography; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Abstract : Patients undergoing cardiac surgery were investigated before and after the operation.Ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) relationships were examined by the multiple inert gas elimination method, and atelectasis and aeration of the lungs were examined by computedtomography (CT). READ MORE
