  1. 1. Hyperthyroidism : incidence and long term quality-of-life

    Author : Mirna Abraham Nordling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hyperthyroidism; Thyrotoxicosis; Graves disease; Toxic Multinodular Goitre; Solitary Toxic Adenoma; Incidence; Quality of life; Suicide;

    Abstract : Hyperthyroidism is a common disorder which in general affects approximately 2 % of women and 0.2 % of men. There are three main types of hyperthyroidism, caused by increased thyroid hormone production: Graves disease, toxic multinodular goitre and solitary toxic adenoma. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on catecholamine function in human fat cells

    Author : Lena Hellström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adipose tissue; human; catecholamines; lipolysis; adrenoceptors; mRNAhormone-sensitive lipase; hypo-caloric diet; thyroid hormones.;

    Abstract : Human adipose tissue is a heterogeneous organ as regards metabolism. The effects of catecholamines, the main lipolytic hormones in man vary considerably in different regions. Fat cell lipolysis also changes in a number of physiological and pathophysiological states. READ MORE

  3. 3. Description and prediction of clinical radiosensitivity : emphasis on normal tissue reactions

    Author : Roger Tell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Radiotherapy; radiosensitivity; normal tissue; thyroid; cell cycle; lung injury;

    Abstract : There is a range in the severity of normal tissue reactions observed when cancer patients receive radiotherapy (RT). The limits of dosage in RT have empirically been set by doses that have caused severe reactions in the most sensitive patients. The understanding of factors governing variations of radiosensitivity is therefore very important in RT. READ MORE

  4. 4. In vitro studies on the mechanisms of inhibited thyroidal iodide uptake and destructive thyroiditis as adverse effects of amiodarone and interferon-gamma

    Author : Sofia Tedelind; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : thyroid; amiodarone; interferon-gamma; iodide transport; tight junction; mitochondria; endocytosis;

    Abstract : The clinical use of the potent anti-arrhythmic drug amiodarone is limited due to adverse effects e.g. in the thyroid comprising both hypo- and hyperthyroidism. Amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction can occur in subjects with normal thyroid glands but also in those with an underlying thyroid abnormality resulting in an aggravation of the condition. 5. 5. Affective disorders and their treatments : implications for thyroid function

    Author : Ingrid Lieber; Ursula Werneke; Michael Ott; Mats Eliasson; John McGrath; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bipolar disorder; affective disorder; lithium; thyroid dysfunction; hyperthyroidism; hypothyroidism; Delphi-consensus; psykiatri; Psychiatry;

    Abstract : BackgroundThe relationship between affective disorders, mood-stabilisers and thyroid dysfunction is complex and poorly understood. Symptoms of thyroid dysfunction can overlap with symptoms of affective disorder, destabilise mood, and impact physical health. READ MORE
