6. Preparation and characterisation of refractory whiskers and selected alumina composites
Abstract : A whisker is a common name of single crystalline inorganic fibre of small dimensions, typically 0.5-1 μm in diameter and 20-50 μm in length. Whiskers are mainly used as reinforcement of ceramics. This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of new whisker types. READ MORE

7. Epitaxial thin films of group 4 transition metal diborides
Abstract : Group 4 transition metal diboride films were deposited epitaxially onto different substrates, typically at 900 °C, using direct-current magnetron sputtering from compound targets of ZrB2, TiB2, and HfB2. Epitaxial ZrB2 has been deposited on Al2O3(0001), 4H-SiC(0001), and Si(100) describing the epitaxial relationships on Si(100) for the first time, where two relationships were observed from pole-figure analysis, namely A) in-plane: ZrB2[001] ∥ Si[110] and ZrB2[110] ∥ Si[110], out-of-plane: ZrB2(100) ∥ Si(100), and B) in-plane: ZrB2[11] ∥ Si[110] and the same rotated 90° around the 102 axis, out-of- plane: ZrB2(102) ∥ Si(100). 8. On the Nucleation and Inoculation of Metals
Abstract : Latent heat during recalesence and nucleation and post-recalesence temperature was analysed for refractory metals. An effect on latent heat was found by alloying the pure elements with other refractories. Latent heat was found to be 15-65% of tabulated values. Interface energy was evaluated from undercooling experiments. READ MORE

9. Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Diborides
Abstract : This thesis is devoted towards physical vapor deposition (PVD) of thin films of transition-metal (TM) diborides, focused on the material system TiBx, Ti1-xAlxB2-y and CrBx. The metal diborides are a large family of compounds with both metallic and ceramic properties, due to its bonding nature being a mix of covalent and ionic bonds. READ MORE

10. Surface modification of inorganic materials with graphene oxide : From solution to high-temperature synthesis
Abstract : The use of graphene as an additive in materials is often challenging due to the agglomeration of the two-dimensional graphene sheets. An alternative additive is graphene oxide (GO), an oxidized form of graphene, which is easily dispersed in water. READ MORE
