  1. 1. Nitric oxide in brain contusion

    Author : Caroline Gahm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Apoptosis; Colchicine; Dexamethasone; eNOS; human; immunohistochemistry; iNOS; L-NAME; L-NIL; neuronal degeneration; Nimodipine; nitric oxide; NO; nNOS; rat; SPBN; Tirilazad Mesylate; traumatic brain injury;

    Abstract : Trauma to the brain is a leading cause of death and disability. The primary injury initiates a cascade of biochemical reactions in the brain that causes further neuronal damage, a process referred to as secondary brain injury. READ MORE

  2. 2. Survival of Cultured and Grafted Embryonic Dopaminergic Neurones - Effects of hypothermia and prevention of oxidative stress

    Author : Jenny Karlsson; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; 6-OHDA; lazaroid; PBN; brain; transplant; Parkinson s disease; dopamine; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Transplantation of embryonic dopaminergic neurones can ameliorate symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, but a major obstacle for clinical transplantations to overcome is the low survival (typically 5-10%) of implanted nigral neurones. If cell death in nigral grafts can be prevented, less embryonic tissue would be needed per transplantation session and hence more patients could receive intracerebral grafts as a therapy for Parkinson’s disease. 3. 3. Neuronal Cell Death and Restoration in the Basal Ganglia: Implications for Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases

    Author : Oskar Hansson; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; basal ganglia; Parkinson s disease; Huntington s disease; neural transplantation; restoration; NMDA receptor; excitotoxicity; calcium; caspase; neuronal cell death; apoptosis; transgenic mouse; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder presenting with chorea, dementia and extensive striatal neuronal death. The mechanism through which the widely expressed mutant huntingtin mediates striatal neurotoxicity is unknown. Excitotoxicity, i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Intracranial and intraocular grafting of fetal ventral mesencephalic and striatal tissues : neuronal survival and nerve growth characteristics

    Author : Lars Björklund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Parkinson s disease; grafting; ventral mesencephalon; striatum; dopamine; innervation; growth pattem; GDNF; U-74006F;

    Abstract : Parkinson's disease is caused by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the ventral mesencephalon. Various animal models and clinical trials has shown that grafts of fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue can survive and functionally reinnervate the dopamine-depleted striatum, leading to long-term improvements of therapeutic value, but still symptomatic relief is far from complete.
