  1. 1. Progesterone metabolites : learning, tolerance, antagonism & metabolism

    Author : Charlotte Öfverman; Inga-Maj Johansson; Torbjörn Bäckström; Esa Korpi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allopregnanolone; isoallopregnanolone; THDOC; learning; tolerance; antagonism; inhibition; patch clamp; Morris water maze; metabolism; epimerization; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Progesterone metabolites as allopregnanolone, isoallopregnanolone and tetrahydrodeoxy-corticosterone (THDOC) are increased in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, throughout pregnancy and during stress. Allopregnanolone and THDOC are neurosteroids with 3α-hydroxy, 5α-configurations and positive modulating effect on the GABAA receptor. READ MORE

  2. 2. Unmasking fault tolerance : Quantifying deterministic recovery dynamics in probabilistic environments

    Author : Nils Müllner; Germany Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The present book focuses on distributed systems operating under probabilistic influences like faults. How well can such systems provide their service under the effects of faults? How well can they recover from faults? Along with a thorough introduction into the area of fault tolerance, this book introduces a measure called limiting window availability to answer such questions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS

    Author : Malin Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; PARP-1; tolerance; global gene expression; apoptosis; cerebral blood flow;

    Abstract : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 4. 4. Induction of operational tolerance to allografts and xenografts

    Author : Matthias Corbascio; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; serology; Immunology; allograft; xenograft; heart transplantation; tolerance; anti-LFA-1; CTLA4Ig; anti-CD40L;

    Abstract : Inhibition of the costimulatory molecules B7 and CD40L with CTLA4Ig and anti-CD40L administered only during the first week after transplantation induces indefinite survival of allo- and xenogeneic heart transplants and significantly prolongs skin grafts in C3H mice. However, this treatment protocol is not as effective in C57BL/6 mice which reject skin transplants with nearly the same median survival time as untreated controls. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ecology and evolution of tolerance in two cruciferous species

    Author : Elin Boalt; Kari Lehtilä; Johan Ehrlén; Julia Koricheva; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; herbivory; tolerance; methodology; Raphanus raphanistrum; Cardamine pratensis; folivory; apex removal; plant competition; ploidy levels; herbivore pressure; Other biology; Övrig biologi; växtekologi; Plant Ecology;

    Abstract : Tolerance to herbivory is the ability of plants to maintain fitness in spite of damage. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the genetic variation and expression of tolerance within species, determine whether and in what conditions tolerance has negative side-effects, and how tolerance is affected by different ecological factors.
