  1. 1. Inferring Land Use from Remote Sensing Imagery : A context-based approach

    Author : Michael Meinild Nielsen; Bo Malmberg; Anders Wästfelt; Douglas A. Stow; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; land use; remote sensing; urban remote sensing; image analysis; segmentation; spatial context; land cover; land cover configuration; farming types; bark beetle; dead trees; forest inventory; kulturgeografi; Human Geography;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigates the potential of classification methods based on spatial context to infer specific forms of land use from remote sensing data. The problem is that some types of land use are characterized by a complex configuration of land covers that traditional per-pixel based methods have problems classifying due to spectral heterogeneity. 2. 2. Explaining Trends in Car Use

    Author : Anne Bastian; Maria Börjesson; Jonas Eliasson; Oded Cats; Patricia Mokhtarian; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; car use; peak car; VMT; VKT; Transportvetenskap; Transport Science;

    Abstract : Many western countries have seen a plateau and subsequent decline in car travel during the early 21st century. What has generated particular interest and debate is the claim that the development cannot only be explained by changes in traditional explanatory factors such as GDP, fuel prices and land-use. 3. 3. The Shepherds of Þjórsárver. : Traditional Use and Hydropower Development in the Commons of the Icelandic Highland

    Author : Helga Ögmundardóttir; Hugh Beach; Gísli Pálsson; Mark Nuttall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Land use disputes; local peoples; sheep herding; damming; commons; identity; traditions; nationalism; Þjórsárver wetland reserve.; Cultural anthropology; Kulturantropologi; Kulturantropologi; Cultural Anthropology;

    Abstract : This study explores a damming dispute that has been going on for over four decades in Iceland, about whether a dam, Norðlingaölduveita, should be built in the central highland, near the glacier Hofsjökull and the wetland reserve Þjórsárver, or not.  The study focuses on the local resistance against the dam, led by a group of people in the farming community Gnúpverjahreppur, which has its highland grazing commons in the Þjórsárver area. 4. 4. Land Use Change in Space and Time : implications for plant species conservation in semi-natural grasslands

    Author : Regina Lindborg; Ove Eriksson; Johan Ehrlén; Thomas Elmqvist; Markus Fischer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diversity; management; restoration; landscape; history; Population viability analysis; seed-sowing; Primula farinosa; Campanula rotundifolia; grazing; fragmentation; extinction risk; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Land use change has during the last century altered the traditional rural landscape in Sweden, resulting in a major decline in species diversity. Traditional small-scale farming, with a remarkably high small-scale species richness, has changed in favour of rationalized agriculture, and many semi-natural grasslands, i.e. READ MORE

  5. 5. Vegetation and land-use in the Småland Uplands, southern Sweden, during the last 6000 years

    Author : Per Lagerås; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geologi; physical geography; Sweden; Geology; Småland Uplands; land-use history; pollen analysis; Holocene vegetation history; mineral magnetic analysis; AMS dating; clearance cairns; hay production; shifting cultivation; Picea migration; slash-and-burn cultivation; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : Palaeoecological methods were applied to peat and sediment cores recovered from one bog (Bråtamossen) and two lakes (Avegöl and Femtingagölen) in the Småland Uplands, southern Sweden. The general aim was to reconstruct the landuse and vegetation history for the last 6000 years in this agriculturally marginal region. READ MORE
