11. Computer Vision for Automated Traffic Safety Assessment : A Machine Learning Approach
Abstract : Traffic safety is a complex and important research area with the potential to save many lives in the future. Two key problems are considered, namely the gathering of reliable and detailed road user statistics which can be used to estimate the safety of a traffic environment and taking advantage of surveillance infrastructure to guide and assist vehicles in real time, primarily autonomous ones. 12. Drivers overtaking cyclists and pedestrians: Modeling road-user behavior for traffic safety
Abstract : In a world aiming to shift to more sustainable modes of transportation, vulnerable road users (VRUs) like cyclists and pedestrians are still confronted with significant barriers to safety, particularly on rural roads where overtaking maneuvers represent a frequent and dangerous interaction with motorized traffic. If drivers misjudge their kinematics, even near-crashes without physical contact can harm the perceived safety of the VRU, which may decrease the willingness to continue cycling or walking on these roads. 13. Surrogate Measures of Safety with a Focus on Vulnerable Road Users : An exploration of theory, practice, exposure, and validity
Abstract : Surrogate measures of safety (SMoS) are meant to function as tools to investigate traffic safety. The term surrogate indicates that these measures do not rely on crash data; instead, they focus on identifying safety critical events (or near-crashes) in traffic, which can be used as an alternative to crash records. 14. Moral responsibility and the ethics of traffic safety
Abstract : The general aim of this thesis is to present and analyse traffic safety from an ethical perspective and to explore some conceptual and normative aspects of moral responsibility. Paper I presents eight ethical problem areas that should be further analysed in relation to traffic safety. READ MORE

15. Road Safety Development Index : Theory, Philosophy and Practice
Abstract : This dissertation develops, presents and tests a new international tool, the so-called Road Safety Development Index (RSDI), which indicates in a comprehensive and easy way the severity of the road safety situation in a specific country and/or in comparison with other countries. There are three pillars of outcomes involved in the framework of RSDI. READ MORE
