  2. 2. Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury

    Author : Björn Reinsfelt; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Cardiac surgery; cerrebral dysfunction; cardiopulmonary bypass; anaesthetics; aortic valve replacement; transcranial Doppler; cerebraospinal fluid; blood-brain barrier;

    Abstract : Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury Björn Reinsfelt Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Institute of Clinical Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Abstract Cerebral dysfunction (CD) occurs frequently after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The main causes of CD are thought to be cerebral hypoperfusion, cerebral microembolisation , cerebral inflammation or disruption of the blood brain barrier (BBB). READ MORE

  3. 3. New Intraoperative Techniques to Improve Advanced Aortic Root Surgery

    Author : Faleh Alrashidi; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Modified Ross Operation; Aortic Root surgery; Microemboli signals MES ; Transcranial Doppler TCD ; Acute plateletphersis APP ; Transesophageal echocardiography TEE ; de-airing;

    Abstract : Study I: Thirteen patients underwent a modified Ross operation in which the free-standing pulmonary autograft was supported externally by a Dacron vascular prosthetic jacket (DVPJ). The tailor-made DVPJ prevented dilatation of the neo-aortic root significantly following a median follow-up of 47 months compared to a cohort of l3 matched patients undergoing conventional Ross operation. 4. 4. Lund Concept for De-airing of the Left Heart. Clinical Evaluation

    Author : Maya Landenhed Smith; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Keywords : open left heart surgery; de-airing; gaseous cerebral microemboli; transcranial Doppler sonography;

    Abstract : Background: Residual air accumulated air in the pulmonary veins constitutes a challenge to achievment of complete de-airing in open left heart surgery. To adress this problem, a conceptual method for de-airing was developed in Lund comprising bilateral opening of the pleurae to induce pulmonary collapse and a strategy with gradual pulmonary reperfusion and ventilation at weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
