  1. 1. Translation, Teamwork, and Technology : The Use of Social and Material Scaffolds in the Translation Process

    Author : Raphael Sannholm; Yvonne Lindqvist; Hanna Risku; Mona Blåsjö; Maureen Ehrensberger-Dow; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; cognitive translation studies; socio-cognitive approaches; ethnography; translation workplace; translation process; scaffolding; extended translation; social interaction; translation technology; Translation Studies; översättningsvetenskap;

    Abstract : This dissertation explores translators’ interactions with social and material resources in the translation process. The general aim of the study is to contribute to the knowledge about cognitive translation processes in naturalistic settings, with a specific focus on the ways in which translators interact with social actors and technological resources. 2. 2. Digital Innovation : Orchestrating Network Activities

    Author : Jesper Lund; Carina Ihlström Eriksson; Jonny Holmström; Högskolan i Halmstad; []

    Abstract : Digitization of analogue everyday artifacts, i.e. when physical products are equipped with digital capabilities, has a profound impact on today’s society. Some examples of these digital innovations aimed at consumer markets are the “connected” car, the digitized television set, and in the near future, digitized IKEA furniture. READ MORE

  3. 3. Adaptive Evolution of the Bacterial Translation Machinery

    Author : Arindam De Tarafder; Suparna Sanyal; Michael Y. Pavlov; Ruben L. Jr. Gonzalez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; Translation; Translation machinery; Elongation; Evolution; RNA world; Cold bacteria; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : The process of protein synthesis via translation is of paramount importance for the existence of life on Earth. The bacterial translation machinery has embraced more than 3.5 billion years of molecular evolution to adapt and function efficiently under the provided physiological conditions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Finding the unknowns in trans-translation

    Author : Natalia Ivanova; Måns Ehrenberg; Nenad Ban; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; trans-translation; tmRNA; SmpB; kinetics; footprinting; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Ribosomes stalled on problematic mRNAs can be rescued by a mechanism called trans-translation. This mechanism employs a dual transfer-messenger RNA molecule (tmRNA) together with a helper protein (SmpB). In this work we have used an in vitro translation system with pure components to further clarify the roles of tmRNA and SmpB in trans-translation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evolutionary Mechanisms Shaping Bacterial Translation Termination

    Author : Shreya Pundir; Suparna Sanyal; Martin Ott; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; Protein; Release Factor; Translation; Termination; Stop codon; Evolution; Mutation; Kinetics; Cryo-EM; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : Translation termination in bacteria involves precise reading of stop codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) and coordinated peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis by the class-I release factors (RFs) on the ribosome (70S). This thesis investigates the evolutionary and post-translational modification mechanisms of these RFs and the concurrent effect on bacterial translation termination. READ MORE
