  1. 1. Targeted and untargeted analysis of organic contaminants from on-site sewage treatment facilities : Removal, fate and environmental impact

    Author : Kristin Blum; Peter Haglund; Patrik Andersson; Pim Leonards; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; decentralized sewage treatment; wastewater; surface water; environmental fate; bioavailability; removal efficiency; mass fluxes; biochar; environment; GC×GC-MS; LC-IM-MS; mass spectrometry; contaminants; pollutants; prioritization; non-target analysis; screening; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : On-site sewage treatment facilities (OSSFs) are widely used all over the world to treat wastewater when large-scale sewage treatment plants (STPs) are not economically feasible. Although there is great awareness that the release of untreated wastewater into the environment can lead to water-related diseases and eutrophication, little is known about organic contaminants and their removal by OSSFs, environmental load and fate. 2. 2. Recirculation of scrapped resources : The role of material information in enhancing the sustainability of recycling

    Author : Reinol Josef Compañero; Andreas Feldmann; Peter Samuelsson; Pär Jönsson; Guozhu Ye; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Steel recycling; anthropogenic resources; scrap; value of information; Circular Economy; sustainability; Stål återvinning; antropogena resurser; skrot; cirkulär ekonomi; hållbarhet; Materials Science and Engineering; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Industries have responded to the climate change problem by positioning their activities as compatible with concepts such as the Circular Economy. Conveying the idea of maximizing and keeping the resources in a manner that aligns with the principles of sustainable development, the endorsements for implementing circularity measures has arguably become a boon for businesses. 3. 3. Role of soil organic matter for immobilisation of metals : treatment of leachate from MSWI bottom ashes

    Author : Jurate Kumpiene; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Waste Science and Technology; Avfallsteknik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the focus is laid on the ability of natural organic matter (OM) to serve as a metal stabilising agent. The metal contaminants investigated arise from the MSWI bottom ash leachate. Besides the high content of metals, elevated pH and salinity are characteristic for ash leachate that, in turn, can alter the functionality of OM. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sediment transport from source to sink in the Lake Baikal basin : Impacts of hydroclimatic change and mining

    Author : Jan Pietroń; Jerker Jarsjö; Enrica Viparelli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment transport; human impact; hydroclimatic change; surface mining; metal-enriched sediment; Lake Baikal; the Selenga River; the Selenga Delta; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Different magnitude, intensity and timing of precipitation can impact runoff, hillslope erosion and transport of sediment along river channels.  Human activities, such as dam construction and surface mining can also considerably influence transport of sediment and sediment-bound contaminants.
