1. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications
Abstract : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. 2. On-site wastewater treatment : Polonite and other filter materials for removal of metals, nitrogen and phosphorus
Abstract : Bed filters using reactive materials are an emerging technology for on-site wastewater treatment. Chemical reactions transfer contaminants from the aqueous to the solid phase. Phosphorus is removed from domestic wastewater by sorption to filter materials, which can then be recycled to agriculture as fertilisers and soil amendments. READ MORE

3. Enhancing material and biological properties of calcium phosphate bone substitute
Abstract : Calcium phosphate materials (CaPs) have proven biocompatible and useful in clinical situations. One CaP showing promise in the clinic is alpha phase tricalcium phosphate ([alpha]-TCP). [alpha]-TCP in powder form can be hydrated and undergoes a reaction resulting in calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA). READ MORE

4. Influence of solid solutions on the properties of some apatite-type calcium salts relevant to the production of phosphate and silicate cements
Abstract : The effects of non-stoichiometry and isomorphic substitutions on the properties of some apatite-type compounds were investigated. These investigations were performed both in the fields of Portland cement chemistry and apatitic calcium phosphate-based biocements. READ MORE

5. Calcium Phosphate Based Biomaterials for Bone Augmentation
Abstract : Basic (apatite-based) calcium phosphate cements (CPCs), and acidic (brushite and monetite-based) CPCs are used as bone replacement materials because of their bioactivity, mouldability and ability to harden in place. However, their application is limited by their inherent brittleness and difficulties related to their handling. READ MORE
