  1. 16. Isolation, characterization and enzymatic hydrolysis of water-soluble wood polysaccharides

    Author : Jon Lundqvist; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; size exclusion chromatography; beta-mannosidase; beta-mannanase; endoglucanase; ethyl hydoxyethyl cellulose; metabolism; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Metabolism; microwave irradiation; O-acetyl-galactoglucomannan; isolation;

    Abstract : The need for new renewable products has enhanced the interest in cellulose and hemicellulose as raw material. The wood plant cell wall is a complex mixture of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and minor amounts of pectin, proteins and extractives. Several interactions between the compounds make them difficult to separate without modification. READ MORE

  2. 17. Fermentation of Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates: Inhibition and Detoxification

    Author : Eva Palmqvist; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fermentation strategies; mechanisms; identification; inhibition; lignocellulosic hydrolysates; Ethanol; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; virology; virologi; mykologi; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; bacteriology; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The ethanol yield and productivity obtained during fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates is decreased due to the presence of inhibiting compounds, such as weak acids, furans and phenolic compounds produced during hydrolysis. Evaluation of the effect of various biological, physical and chemical detoxification treatments by fermentation assays using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to characterise inhibitors. READ MORE

  3. 18. Structure-function studies of GH7 cellulases, key enzymes in the global carbon cycle

    Author : Topi Haataja; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Enzyme mixtures used for lignocellulosic ethanol production are most commonly derived from filamentous fungi, and enzymes from the glycoside hydrolase family 7 (GH7) constitute the most abundant components in these cocktails. In this thesis I have aimed to increase our understanding of this enzyme family, with focus on the interrelation between their structure and function. READ MORE

  4. 19. Structure and function studies of GH45 glycoside hydrolases

    Author : Laura Okmane; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material in nature is carried out by a plethora of cellulases. Glycoside hydrolase family 45 (GH45) enzymes are small cellulases most commonly found in fungi that catalyse the hydrolysis of β(1→4) linked glucans. READ MORE

  5. 20. Exploring beta-mannan acting glycosidase families in hydrolysis and mannosyl transfer

    Author : Simon Birgersson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glycoside hydrolases; beta-mannanase; Transglycosylation; enzymatic synthesis; Enzyme synergy; enzyme engineering; MALDI-TOF; HPLC; NMR;

    Abstract : The thesis revolves around the study of glycoside hydrolases (GH), specifically GH5 β-mannanases and GH36 α-galactosidase (I-III), as well as a GH130 mannoside phosphorylase (I, IV). These enzymes are investigated for their actions on and conversion of hemicellulosic β-mannan, including food-grade galactomannan and softwood galactoglucomannan, along with manno-oligosaccharides (MOS) derived from such polymers.
