1. The bicuspid aortic valve and thoracic aortic disease
Abstract : About 1% of the population is born with an aortic valve composed of only two cusps, called a bicuspid aortic valve. Bicuspid aortic valve is associated with a high risk of both aortic valve disease and ascending aortic dilatation, which develop at a significantly earlier age than in patients with a normal tricuspid aortic valve. 2. Signs of inflammation in different types of heart valve disease : The VOCIN study
Abstract : Heart valve dysfunction is a relatively common condition in the population, whereas significant heart valve disease is more unusual. The cause of different types of heart valve disease depends on which valve is concerned. Rheumatic heart valve disease, has for a long time been considered to constitute a post-inflammatory condition. READ MORE

3. Midgut carcinoid tumours - biochemical and therapeutic aspects
Abstract : The biology of human midgut carcinoid tumour was studied experimentally in primary cell culture and clinically in patients with the midgut carcinoid syndrome. In cell cultures, tumour cells had a secretory pattern of 5-HTP, 5-HT and 5-HIAA specific for each tumour indicating individual regulation of synthesis/degradation. READ MORE

4. The bicuspid aortic valve : studies on valve morphology and pathology in relation to ascending aortic dilatation and coronary artery disease
Abstract : The prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is 1-2% and is thereby the most common cardiac malformation. BAV is highly associated with valvular dysfunction and aortic conditions such as ascending aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. Of BAV individuals, 25-50% will develop indications for surgical intervention. READ MORE

5. Vascular function in bicuspid aortic valve disease
Abstract : The aortic valve normally consists of three cusps (tricuspid aortic valve, TAV), but in 0.5-2% of the population it consists of only two cusps (bicuspid aortic valve, BAV), which is the most common congenital cardiac malformation. READ MORE
